Schoen & Rasmussen: Obama's poll numbers are falling to earth
The Wall Street Journal ^ | March 13, 2009 | Douglas Schoen & Scott Rasmussen

Posted on 03/12/2009 9:05:10 PM PDT by St. Louis Conservative

It is simply wrong for commentators to continue to focus on President Barack Obama's high levels of popularity, and to conclude that these are indicative of high levels of public confidence in the work of his administration. Indeed, a detailed look at recent survey data shows that the opposite is most likely true. The American people are coming to express increasingly significant doubts about his initiatives, and most likely support a different agenda and different policies from those that the Obama administration has advanced.

Polling data show that Mr. Obama's approval rating is dropping and is below where George W. Bush was in an analogous period in 2001. Rasmussen Reports data shows that Mr. Obama's net presidential approval rating -- which is calculated by subtracting the number who strongly disapprove from the number who strongly approve -- is just six, his lowest rating to date.

Overall, Rasmussen Reports shows a 56%-43% approval, with a third strongly disapproving of the president's performance. This is a substantial degree of polarization so early in the administration. Mr. Obama has lost virtually all of his Republican support and a good part of his Independent support, and the trend is decidedly negative.

A detailed examination of presidential popularity after 50 days on the job similarly demonstrates a substantial drop in presidential approval relative to other elected presidents in the 20th and 21st centuries. The reason for this decline most likely has to do with doubts about the administration's policies and their impact on peoples' lives.

There is also a clear sense in the polling that taxes will increase for all Americans because of the stimulus, notwithstanding what the president has said about taxes going down for 95% of Americans. Close to three-quarters expect that government spending will grow under this administration.

Republicans need to quit being so timid. We're not going to stop his insane socialist agenda if we play with kid gloves.

Why can’t Republicans speak up and call a spade a spade? Are they afraid of being called racists or do they just not know how to explain conservative principles, or do they just have no consistent belief system and that’s the reason their thoughts appears muddled and their speech unconvincing.

No one wants to be the first one to smite the Numinous Negro.

Once the first blow lands and lightning doesn’t strike anyone down, the rest will attack freely.

Actually, Repubs have been pretty good with their message on the economy lately, which is probably why Obama's popularity is slipping and why the public is strongly against another stimulus.

And the unity in the House and Senate against the 1st stimulus was awesome IMO.

“Why can’t Republicans speak up”

Because most are just good at talking the talk....i’m a firm believer that a huge majority of pols don’t have a core...they are just well connected people that know how to do good public speaking.

We won’t be able to stop everything, but I’ll be happy if we can stop cap n trade, socialized healthcare, & card check. The rest of the stuff will be bad, but those three I mentioned are the worst of the worst.

The wheels of democracy are Turning, however so slowly.
Americans will exert their will upon their elected officials, the wills of the MAJORITY.
For too long the Silent Majority has been at the Malls instead of at the voting booths, and Americans have been missing from the Town Halls, the PTA meetings, and ignoring the Security of the Borders.
Lax citizens are finding themselves infiltrated by Vermin disguised as representatives, Crooked public servants pursuing their own agenda.
Americans enjoyed 200+ years of freedom from Tyranny, and now it is Spring cleaning time.....But first, let’s have a Tea party or two and get organized for the House cleaning.
Freedom isn’t free, and American soil endured another attack upon it on 9/11..... and our military responded..... American citizens need to respond now, and put Freedom back in its rightful place, and take it back from the Vermin and political crooks.
