Almost every victim of the Madoff Scandal has justifiably accused the SEC of the Bush Administration of flubbing their duty! That this happened and the SEC had total failure cannot be realistically argued BUT ...

Harry Markopolis [link to current Bus.Wk. Article] FIRST NOTIFIED the SEC in 1999, the Clinton Administration. Only a very naive person would assume that one call from Madoff wouldn't produce 'advisory' calls from these campaign fund receivers. No threats but simply asking assurances that Mr.Markoff be 'properly treated' as the fat cat that they needed money from in future campaigns.

If this was the Mafia, it would be called 'strong-arming' and racketeering but politics uses much kinder words. Someone smarter than myself needs to find a way to insulate the SEC from such political favoritism.
