Pace of quakes speeding up near Yorba Linda

Saturday update

There have been 14 small earthquakes in and around Orange County in the past 14 days, including a series of quakes in the Chino Hills area near Yorba Linda that seems to be speeding up. The latest quake occurred at 7:59 a.m. today near the Western Hills Golf and Country Club — the third shaker to occur in that general spot since 1:06 p.m. on Friday, when a 2.1 quake occurred. There also was a 2.1 quake there at 9:12 p.m. Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey says.

(Click here for a map of all quakes that have occurred in/near O.C. since March 1.)

As I reported in an earlier post, these three quakes happened west of the Chino fault, and not far from the Yorba Linda trend, the seismic zone that produced last July’s 5.4 quake,  (story) .

USGS seismologist Sue Hough said in an e-mail earlier this week that, “A modern understanding tells us that earthquakes do cluster, so any time you have activity there is an increased probability of more events. But, short of aftershocks following a major earthquake, the probabilities are very low.

“(There have been) lots of attempts since 1952 to ‘read the seismic tea leaves’,” Hough said. “None of them have panned out. On the other hand, this if California, there’s always something to be concerned about.”

Readers also should keep in mind that the Internet, and Google mapping software, allows the media to monitor and report quakes more easily. So, the current series near Yorba Linda might not be unusual, just more closely reported.

Im not an expert on quakes but this doesn’t sound normal. Do quakes in California just happen at random near the fault lines or can they just advance like that? I remember 10 years ago there were a series of quakes that just advanced to each city in Northern Turkey.

Found this as I was looking for an article on Sonic booms heard in Orange County

On the Sonic Boom...which I had not heard about:

Mysterious 'Sky Quakes' Rattle Nerves in the O.C.

***********************EXCERPT*********************

KTLA News

March 5, 2009

DANA POINT -- Some mysterious shaking is rattling nerves in Orange County.  But, there may be a simple explanation.

Thousands of people reported feeling shaking and window rattling Tuesday night about 9:20 p.m.  Experts say it wasn't an earthquake, but likely a sonic boom produced by a high speed jet, according to Bob Dollar, a seismologist at the U.S. Geological Survey.

"This morning Kate Hutton (of Caltech) reviewed seismograms from the event last night," Dollar said in an email. "These data are consistent with a sonic event coming onshore near Dana Point and traveling northward inland."
The F/A 18 Super Hornet fighter jets used in Southern California by the Navy and Marines are capable of breaking the sound barrier and producing a sonic boom felt on the ground, but no one reported seeing the high flying jets.

The same thing happens locally when the space shuttle lands at Edwards Air Force Base but, there are currently no shuttles in flight.

Residents reports feeling rattling of their doors and windows but were surprised to see other things, like wind chimes still. Others say they noticed their dogs acting funny and said the shaking felt like someone was pounding on their front door.

So far, neither the Air Force nor the Navy has confirmed the flight of any supersonic jets in the area.

I’d opt for random.. but you never know based on the types of strata involved, someday something has to give, bigtime, ‘til then, we see bursts of activity here and there, I’m a few miles away from a recently more bumpy area as well, but considering california is one giant seismic zone.. ya have your survival supplies set aside and hope you’re dust when the next big one hits. ;-)

but likely a sonic boom produced by a high speed jet,

And if ya keep flappin' about it, the black helicopters will come calling.

:)

Hope it's nothing for the small quakes.

In general the more small quakes the better.

There are two ways to release the built up energy...

All at once or over many small releases.

The most dangerous locations are locations known to have fault lines that have had little or no activity for a very long time.

I've given up. Can't even convince my daughter and her hubby to put together the government recommended “You MAY have only 6 min. to get out of your home emergency kit”.

Not for them. . . just the smug attitude they live in the magical kingdom and the rest of us are all drama queens for being concerned.

During the last quake, Mr.Hubby, was at lunch, sleeping in his car, rolling around during the quake, and never woke up. Never even knew there had been a quake until someone told him.

Any reports of mysterious cylindrical “meteors” buried in the ground out at the Wilmuth Farm?

**** If you’ve never experienced an earthquake, its impossible to imagine. Sometimes the ground starts shaking and the heart starts pumping because you never know if this is the BIG ONE. Sometimes its a jolt and then the ground (and anything attached to it) starts swaying back and forth. You cant run away from it. you have no where to go. As the ground shakes and everything in the house is falling off the shelf you dont know if its going to stop or get worse. Having lived here all my life, earthquakes are always in my mind. People living here know that the BIG one will come. Whether it will be in the north (SF) or south (LA) is a roll of the dice. Its like living in the midwest. There is always that chance that a tornado will hit. The only difference is that there are usually tornado warnings. The only warning for the Big one is that it will happen in the next 30 years. Hows that for peace of mind.

“So far, neither the Air Force nor the Navy has confirmed the flight of any supersonic jets in the area.”

Easy puzzle to solve. Just call up the tower at Area 51 and ask for the flight operations for the days in question.

PS I’m not quite sure the information operator has the tower number. But surely it is on Google.

;-)
