PC Police? Some Want St. Patrick's Day to Be 'Shamrock Day'
NewsBusters ^ | 3/18/09 | Tim Graham

Terry Mattingly at Get Religion found a story by Terri Jo Ryan in the Waco Tribune-Herald that may be the just the first signal of another saddening, secularizing trend: the sensitivity police changing the name of Saint Patrick’s Day. It might be offensive to someone, somewhere to discuss saints or great Christian missionaries like Patrick:

Faith and begorrah, is nothing sacred?

Some folks are trying to transform the name of Tuesday’s holiday from St. Patrick’s Day to "Shamrock Day."

Card shops have banners proclaiming the occasion; the Disney Channel is using the term; and some places in this country have changed the name of their community celebrations of Celtic heritage to the "nonoffending" terminology.

Here in Jackson, we’ve had the “St. Paddy’s Day” Parade. Not much celebrating the Romanized Briton who, after being enslaved by Irish marauders and escaping, returned to Christianize the Emerald Isles.

In other news, Hanukkah is being renamed "Candle Week and a Day".

I had a friend (former now) just complain about St. Patrick's Day being a religious holiday! She was telling me how happy she was that they didn't celebrate Valentine's Day at her son's PUBLIC SCHOOL and instead celebrated friendship day.

As a joke, I told her she must not like St. Patrick's Day either and want it out of the public schools and she agreed!

We don't talk anymore because we disagreed on so much more than that.

So, how long will it be before this group has to change names?

You can never joke about how silly these people might be - because they will always come through.

The Disney Channel also mentions ‘winter holiday’, but no Christmas.

Next will be demanding Christian Churchs take down their crosses and removing the name “Christian” or “St.....” from their signs so the Christo-phobes won’t be offended.

True. Their goal is the total elimination of Christianity.

Or we can change the name to anything we want no matter how insulting and you’ll still vote for us in droves.

Now admittedly St. Patrick’s Day is in celebration of a man who was not named Patrick...who was not Irish...who did not bring Catholicism to Ireland...who did not drive the snakes out of Ireland...and who was not born and did not die on March 17th. But leave the name alone for tradition’s sake if nothing else.
