Obamas Prepare to Plant White House Vegetable Garden By MARIAN BURROS

WASHINGTON — On Friday, Michelle Obama will begin digging up a patch of White House lawn to plant a vegetable garden, the first since Eleanor Roosevelt’s victory garden in World War II. There will be no beets (the president doesn’t like them) but arugula will make the cut.

While the organic garden will provide food for the first family’s meals and formal dinners, its most important role, Mrs. Obama said, will be to educate children about healthful, locally grown fruit and vegetables at time when obesity has become a national concern.

In an interview in her office, Mrs. Obama said, “My hope is that through children, they will begin to educate their families and that will, in turn, begin to educate our communities.”

Twenty-three fifth graders from Bancroft Elementary School in Washington will help her dig up the soil for the 1,100-square-foot plot in a spot visible to passers-by on E Street. (It’s just below the Obama girls’ swing set.) Students from the school, which has had a garden since 2001, will also help plant, harvest and cook the vegetables, berries and herbs.

Almost the entire Obama family, including the president, will pull weeds, “whether they like it or not,” Mrs. Obama said laughing. “Now Grandma, my mom, I don’t know.” Her mother, she said, would probably sit back and say: “Isn’t that lovely. You missed a spot.”

You know what? I have no problem with this. I just bought some heirloom tomato seeds and am going to try growing them in some boxes. Good for her.

I am a gardener, so this seems like a good idea to me. I would guess the White House had a kitchen garden for most of its first century. I would encourage everyone to plant a few seeds. Homegrown veggies taste so much better than the ones in the supermarket.

The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution kicks off in style.

Next up, pig iron smelters in every backyard.

On Friday, Michelle Obama will begin digging up a patch of White House lawn to plant a vegetable garden ..... 1,100-square-foot plot in a spot visible to passers-by on E Street.

Michelle Obama will take the time to begin digging up the plot and a dozen photographers will be there for the photo op.

After that, once the political illusion has been created on that first day, she will invest time in that garden only when a photographer is around. Otherwise, the plot will be very carefully tended and weeded and watered by a U.S. Government employee at U.S. taxpayer's expense. It will be an immaculate garden.

When the first vegetables are ready for picking, Michelle Obama will again be there .... with a photographer ..... to be photographed harvesting the most expensive vegetables in the United States.

There is so much nitrogen in the soil under the White House lawn that an “organic” garder could not be grown in the next 20 years. One thing for sure is what ever is planted will grow like crazy. A little weed perhaps?

First Family To Plant White House Veggie Garden
The Note ^ | March 18, 2009

ABC News’ Brian Hartman Reports: President Obama’s latest shovel-ready project is close to home — in fact, right in his own yard. In an effort to promote healthy eating, the first family will be planting a vegetable garden right on the White House grounds.

ABC News’ Ann Compton and Sunlen Miller report that the new White House vegetable garden will be dug up and planted on the South grounds of the White House — near the fountain but out of view of the main house.

Though the 16-acre complex is maintained by the National Park Service, one worker who preferred to remain anonymous assured ABC News that National Park Service staff won’t do the sowing and planting. The White House residence staff will handle that.
