In an unusual step, the Senate's top leaders were interviewed yesterday by the chamber's ethics committee in its ongoing investigation of Sen. Roland W. Burris's campaign to win appointment to the seat vacated by President Obama.

Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) and Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) met with the committee, in separate 30-minute discussions, to recount their interactions with Burris (D) during his effort to be seated after he was appointed by then-Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D).

Since Sen. Burris is a Democrat, Senators Reid and Durbin won’t try to get rid of him. He’ll retain his seat until Jan. 2011. He’ll lose the primary to Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias. The republican candidates will be Congressmen Roskam and Kirk (my rep.), and Roskam will win the primary. Who will run for Roskam’s U.S. House seat? I hope that, in the race to replace Kirk, St. Rep. Elizabeth Coulson and former St. Rep. Terry Parke (both Republicans) will run.

I think they’ve managed to back themselves into a corner. The idea seems to have been to seat Burris, get his vote on the Porculus package, and then suddenly discover that he was a serial perjurer when he applied for the job and throw him under the bus. That way, they wouldn’t be stuck with a loser in office for the next election.

But they underestimated the difficulty of booting a black, even under the leadership of a black president. So, now they’re stuck with him until election time, and about all they can do is wring their hands and pretend to “investigate” his string of perjured statements.
