Yet again, a Saturday Wall Street Journal "Remembrances" column is filled with another interesting American personality, who isn't well known, but his story is entertaining.
Apparently and sadly, Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton recently committed suicide rather than serve his second sentence in the federal pen for moonshining. I don't know about you, but this Appalachian legend producing moonshine without a license wasn't harming me, and it smacks more of big brother at work and big government over-regulating Americans literally to death than it does a crime that harmed society.
There is no justice when this harmless 62-year-old hillbilly was about to serve more time in federal prison, when Hezbollah's CIA/FBI spy Nada Nadim Prouty won't ever serve a day in prison.

Legends die. Let's all bow our heads in memory of Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton - the last of the old moonshiners. You know something is wrong when a harmless old guy gets busted for running an "illegal" whiskey sill. This is not the America we once knew. I just hate what the jackbooted ATF thugs did to him!
RIP, Marvin!

The gummint hates competition; they want to be the only ones making any money when liquor is made.
Keep in mind though; there’s an outfit in Australia makes a nice electric still for purifying “water,” - they export to the U.S....

Moonshiner - Bob Dylan
I've been a moonshiner,
For seventeen long years,
I've spent all my money,
On whiskey and beer,
go to some hollow,
And sit at my still
And if whiskey don't kill me,
Then I don't know what will,
I go to some bar room,
And drink with my friends,
Where the women can't follow,
And see what I spend,
God bless them pretty women,
I wish they was mine,
Their breath is as sweet as,
The dew on the vine,
Let me eat when I am hungry,
Let me drink when I am dry,
A dollar when I am hard up,
Religion when I die,
The whole world's a bottle,
And life's but a dram,
When the bottle gets empty,
It sure ain't worth a damn.

I remember hearing my grandpa John M talking about his brother and my great-uncle Mitchell. He measured his corn crop in gallons rather than bushels.

RIP, Popcorn. My lips took a pull or two of real West Virginny corn squeezin's in my youth. My liver's still here (although I questioned that one after the first chug), the earth didn't get cast into the sun, and I'm a better man for the experience.

OTOH 80% of all adult lead posioning cases (read - deaths) are 'shine related.
Moonshine is Risky
A study of moonshine or illegal distilled spirits produced at 48 different stills found that 43 of the 48 samples had lead levels ranging from five to 599 parts per billion (ppb). Over half the samples contained lead levels exceeding federal water guidelines of 15 ppb.
For regular moonshine consumers, that poses a risk of lead poisoning, but even occasional consumption carries some risk. Lead serves no function in the body but lead poisoning can cause memory loss, brain swelling, paralysis, and even death. About 80% of all adult lead poisoning deaths are related to moonshine consumption.
The study was conducted by Dr. Christopher Holstege, Director of the Division of Medical Toxicology of Virginia Health System.
Hundreds of thousands of gallons of moonshine are produced annually in the U.S. The illegal production is highly profitable and continues because of the heavy taxation of legally-produced distilled spirits. Taxes constitute well over half the price of a typical bottle of spirits.
