On Campus: The Pro-Palestinian’s Real Agenda

During a recent visit to several university campuses in the U.S., I discovered that there is more sympathy for Hamas there than there is in Ramallah.

Listening to some students and professors on these campuses, for a moment I thought I was sitting opposite a Hamas spokesman or a would-be-suicide bomber.

I was told, for instance, that Israel has no right to exist, that Israel’s “apartheid system” is worse than the one that existed in South Africa and that Operation Cast Lead was launched only because Hamas was beginning to show signs that it was interested in making peace and not because of the rockets that the Islamic movement was launching at Israeli communities. I was also told that top Fatah operative Marwan Barghouti, who is serving five life terms in prison for masterminding terror attacks against Israeli civilians, was thrown behind bars simply because he was trying to promote peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

Furthermore, I was told that all the talk about financial corruption in the Palestinian Authority was “Zionist propaganda” and that Yasser Arafat had done wonderful things for his people, including the establishment of schools, hospitals and universities.

The good news is that these remarks were made only by a minority of people on the campuses who describe themselves as “pro-Palestinian,” although the overwhelming majority of them are not Palestinians or even Arabs or Muslims.

The bad news is that these groups of hard-line activists/thugs are trying to intimidate anyone who dares to say something that they don’t like to hear.

When the self-designated “pro-Palestinian” lobbyists are unable to challenge the facts presented by a speaker, they resort to verbal abuse.

Individual chapters are included on the Patriot Act (I was persuaded that it is a GOOD thing); the democratic flip-flop on Iraq once G.W. Bush implemented what they agreed with Clinton needed to be done; the driving components of the current anti-war movement; as well as chapters on individual personalities who are major spokespeople of the Left. Horowitz covers a lot of ground, and he covers it concisely and clearly. Unholy Alliance is richly informative without ever being boring or plodding.

This book is so illuminating that I simply cannot do justice to it here. I love people who reason so clearly that they help me get my own reasoning clear. Horowitz is just that type of person! In the terrain of mindless clichés (no-blood-for-oil, etc.), he is a breath of real fresh air."

A few adjustments are in order.

However much one might respect Sadat's efforts, and even disregarding the Carter and Gore imbecilities, the "Peace" prize is, and always has been, a leftist Attaboy concocted by Norwegian politicians. (And Corey happens to be a Lebanese Christian, so he shouldn't be on this list at all.) One of these medals was also given to an Iranian women's and children's rights activist, Shirin Ebadi, in 2003. And:

-- Najib Mahfooz's prize in literature may not have been appreciated by all of his co-religionists: he was stabbed, nearly to death, in 1994 by an Islamist who took him for a blasphemer.

-- A legitimate prize, this one in physics, was won in 1979 by Sheldon Glashow, Steven Weinberg, and a Pakistani scientist named Abdus Salam (who did most of his work at Cambridge). As everyone must in Pockey-stawn, he had an official registered religion -- in his case, the Ahmadiya Muslim sect, which supports the peaceful propagation of Islam. He left Pakistan for London in 1974 when the Pakistani National Assembly declared Ahmadis to be non-Muslims. He died in 1996 in England, but his body was buried in Pakistan. His tomb's epitaph initially stated "First Muslim Nobel Laureate," but a local magistrate who disapproved of the Ahmadis removed the word "Muslim" from the stone, which now reads, simply and idiotically, "First Nobel Laureate."

-- Ahmed Zewail's prize was in chemistry, not "peace." Zewail was born in Egypt and studied at the (very Westernized) University of Alexandria. However, he did most of his learning, research, and teaching in the U.S.: first at U Penn, then at Berkeley. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1982 and is now at CalTech.

-- Ferid Murad was born in Indiana to an Albanian father and an American mother. Studied at DePauw and Case Western Reserve; taught at UVa and Stanford, then served as a VP at Abbott Labs before starting his own biotech company. It failed, and he went to work at the University of Texas, where he now heads the Institute of Molecular Medicine. Not exactly your scimitar-waving jihadist.

This brings the more or less arguably Muzz Nobels to a grand total of four -- one each in literature, physics, chemistry, and medicine -- but Medawar's isn't one of them.

Sir Peter Medawar was born in 1915 in Brazil to a British mother and a Lebanese Christian father, who left Lebanon because of the pressures on Christians there during the ramp-up to World War I. Peter's birth was registered with the British Consulate, making him a natural-born British subject. He was educated at Oxford, taught and did research there, and spent most of the rest of his professional career in London, working on cell regeneration, tissue grafting, and immunology -- without which organ transplants would still be a pipe-dream. He was knighted in 1965 and died in 1987. It's doubtful that his wife, the Cambridge MD's daughter Jean Shinglewood Taylor, or either of their two daughters ever wore a burqa.
