Roots, my friend, roots. If your root archai, or starting point, is that man is an accident and nothing made everything, then of course there can be no guiding principle beyond what seems good to the individual and, to the extent it furthers individual self-interest, the group.

Thus, "if it feels good, do it!" and "if it's inconvenient and cannot fight back, get rid of it!" There is no concept of love under this worldview, and there is every reason for suspicion of one's fellow human-being, every reason to live in fear. The early history of the USSR is an excellent example.

Basic beliefs about the nature of man lead to the dichotomy of ideologies we see. It’s why you see the same people lining up opposite of each other on almost every issue, though the issues are seemingly unrelated.

Man is created in God’s image, but is a fallen, sinful creature, unchangeable, and incapable of God’s perfection.

VS

Man is an accidental evolution from pond slime, is evolved and evolving, malleable, and perfectible.
