Prosecute Spanish Magistrate Baltasar Garzón for Animal Cruelty

Baltasar Garzón is the activist Spanish magistrate who recently asked a Spanish prosecutor to bring criminal charges against former U.S. Attorney Alberto Gonzalez, Douglas Feith, and other Bush officials because "The Spanish magistrate apparently believes that it can be a crime for American officials to offer the wrong kind of advice to a president of the United States and, furthermore, it can be a crime punishable by a Spanish court." In other words, Mr. Garzon takes the position that Spain can prosecute foreign nationals for alleged actions that did not take place in Spanish territory and that did not involve Spanish nationals. We also recall that Spain proposed prosecution of Israeli Defense Force personnel for the Gaza campaign. The Spanish Inquisition has tried more than its share of Jews (and Protestants) for mostly fabricated offenses, and it is time to put this has-been country in its place.

Baltasar Garzón is attempting to set an extremely dangerous precedent under which any country could attempt to exert jurisdiction over citizens of other countries. As an example, Saudi Arabia or Iran could under Senor Garzón's standards attempt to extradite Americans for criticizing militant "Islam." More to the point, Senor Garzon himself could (with perhaps millions of his fellow Spaniards) be extradited to the United States on felony animal cruelty charges--assuming that everybody accepts the precedent he is attempting to set. "Be careful what you wish for, you might get it."

As reported by Business Week Online,

    A dashing figure with slicked-back hair and a bruising build who loves bullfights and flamenco, Garzón has become a national hero for his dedication to rooting out corruption.
Consortiumnews.com confirms,
    But Garzon had a spirited side. A fan of bullfights...

Here is what Pennsylvania has to say about anybody who attends an animal fight, or pays for admission to an animal fight.
    (H.1) ANIMAL FIGHTING.-- A person commits a felony of the third degree if he:

    (1) for amusement or gain, causes, allows or permits any animal to engage in animal fighting;

    ...(5) wagers on the outcome of an animal fight; [which we suppose makes it illegal to bet that the bull will gore a picador or a similarly desirable outcome]

    (6) pays for admission to an animal fight or attends an animal fight as a spectator; or

    ...This subsection shall not apply to activity undertaken in a normal agricultural operation.

An aunt of mine who attended one in Tijuana about 1960 said she was cheering for the bull.
