CA: More than a quarter of 7th graders drop out (drop-outs outnumber grads in a major community)

More than a quarter of California youngsters attending seventh grade classes in 2001-02 failed to graduate from high school in 2007, and in one major community dropouts outnumbered graduates, according to a new statistical study by the California Dropout Research Project, ..

The state's 480,595 seventh-graders had shrunken to 356,641 high school graduates, the UCSB researchers found. ..

The project asserts that California will see $24.2 billion in economic losses, both lower wages and higher government and crime costs, from that one class's dropouts and will also experience some 28,000 more violent crimes.

Governor seeking $5 billion for schools
http://www.dailybreeze.com/news/ci_12112966?source=rss

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has asked the federal government for $5 billion to keep California schools from laying off teachers, preserve programs and help students enter college.

The state is one of the first to request federal stimulus money from the U.S. Department of Education and could receive $3.1 billion of that money for public schools and colleges by fall.

“We’ve taken steps to protect our schools from the full brunt of our economic situation, and this funding will restore many of the difficult cuts that had to be made to education,” Schwarzenegger said in a statement Thursday.

“I’m committed to passing it directly onto schools as quickly as possible.”

Nah it is a phony stat. They look at the number of 7th graders compare that to the number who graduate at the appropriate time. The difference DOES NOT equate to drop out rate. Some could have moved, some could have gone back to Mexico (or whatever other illegal place they came from), some may have flunked a grade, some may have graduated early, some are in jail, etc etc. These guys are lousy researchers.

AND OF COURSE THEY WANT MORE MONEY FOR A FAILED SYSTEM

Obama family values at work.

Is it any wonder that California went with Obama?

I'd bet you'd see a similar correlation of states with the HIGHEST DROP OUT rates were OBAMA STATES.

Funny how gooberment entities never keep stats such that you could compare or get a handle on costs or performance, isn’t it?

“had shrunken”?

If this is the quality of education that California produces from graduates, maybe we should be glad that more don’t do so.

Sorry to say it, but when kids drop out, it HELPS the kids who have decided to continue studying —nothing is more distracting to a potential learner than being harassed by kids who have made a decision NOT to study.

We need truck drivers, and dish-washers, and those are the kids who will perform those needed services.

Much is said about how in Japan virtually everyone graduates, and that’s MOSTLY a good thing. But there are many cases in which kids are more or less forced to graduate with them kicking and screaming the entire way.

A diploma only reaaaaaaallly means something if there is a significant number of people who CANNOT get one.

“had shrunken” - is that proper? I wonder if they have profiled the dropouts by immigration status.

And we disagree how? The point is you cannot deduce anything from the numbers they provide.

The invisible skunk in the room, is the breakdown on this by ethnicity. Every report I’ve read that addresses the issue of ethnicity with drop-out rates, finds Hispanics the top segment.

Folks like to point to second generation improvements for illegal immigrants. In some ways, that is true. It is still also true that the “educational ethic”, or whatever you wish to term it, seems to be lacking for young Hispanics.

So when you look at the costs associated with drop-outs, that may be something you’d like to know. The illegal immigration scourge on our nation has hidden costs across the board, something that seldom comes to light.

If only it were true and that easy! Iowa has long had the highest graduation rates in the nation and Iowa alternates regularly between being a blue state and a red state. Iowa went for Obama in 2008. Wisconsin, also an Obama state is near the top in preventing drop outs.

Georgia and Mississippi have often had among the lowest graduation rates due to poor retention of black students and they are red states while North Dakota and Nebraska, traditional red states who went for McCain in 2008 are also near the top with very low drop out rates.
Washington DC, as pro-Obama as they get is also terrible at preventing drop outs.

Blow up the public school system and start over.

BTW, the two top drop-out cities have HUGE hispanic school age populations.

While I am somewhat sympathetic to your views on this, I do think they harken back to another time.  I'll explain what I mean.

Sorry to say it, but when kids drop out, it HELPS the kids who have decided to continue studying —nothing is more distracting to a potential learner than being harassed by kids who have made a decision NOT to study.

Interruptions in class by kids who will not behave or strive to learn, do negatively impact the other students.  I agree.

We need truck drivers, and dish-washers, and those are the kids who will perform those needed services.

Yes, we need dishes washed, maid services, car washes, delivery people, construction workers, truck drivers and people to fill a myriad of other odd jobs that don't require an extensive education.  But who is going to fill those jobs?  We have tens of millions of foreign nationals in our nation today, filling those positions.  The one exception would be the long haul truck drivers, but we are on the verge of replacing many of the current truck drivers with Mexican national driven trucks.

The point I am making, is that our undereducated will still need to earn a living to support themselves in the future.  The only thing is, our government has adopted policies that will see them only able to earn third world wages.  That doesn't bode well in this environment.

Much is said about how in Japan virtually everyone graduates, and that’s MOSTLY a good thing. But there are many cases in which kids are more or less forced to graduate with them kicking and screaming the entire way.

Japan has a much more closed society than we do.  They don't have to deal with some of the problems associated with minorities.  It is also a very unsociable thing to do, to refuse to educate yourself in Japan.  I'm sure there are kids who still act out, but I would wager the numbers are no where near the numbers we see here.

A diploma only reaaaaaaallly means something if there is a significant number of people who CANNOT get one.

That is true, but there's also a GPA.  I'm sure perspective employers have some indication of the value of the applicants they assess.  Don't they?

If you drop out of school you should have to prove your are employed or you should be required to serve in the military

you should be required to serve in the military

Oh yea, that's just what we need. Uneducated, Mexican nationals, in our military, guarding our southern border.

“TAPE CUT TWO: GRAMMAR LADY

“Here’s one that has changed because of popular culture, and I’m not sure that we will ever get it back again. (The verb) is shrink. The past is `shrank’ and the past participle is `shrunk.’ But, that movie a few years ago — `Honey I Shrunk the Kids’— used it in error and now everyone is confused about that one.”

AA: That movie title should have been, “Honey I Shrank the Kids.”

RS: Or, “Honey, I Have Shrunk the Kids.”

AA: Grammar Lady says the only way to learn irregular verbs is to memorize them - and she says the easiest way to do that is to learn them in groups that follow similar patterns.”

I agree but I think if they had to get a job or join the military instead of sit around the parents house and smoke dope there would be no more dropouts...
