UK: Roman Catholic adoption agencies cut ties with church over gay equality laws
The Daily Mail (U.K.) / various ^ | April 12, 2009 | Steve Doughty

Posted on 04/12/2009 9:58:41 AM PDT by Stoat

A majority of Roman Catholic adoption agencies have cut their ties with the Church rather than defy gay equality laws.

Five agencies have declared themselves independent - and some have changed their names - to comply with laws that say they must allow homosexual couples to adopt children.

The retreat ends decades in which the adoption charities have worked in the name of the Catholic Church with support from dioceses, clergy and congregations.

The decision to end the formal connection with the Church follows a deadline set by the Government for charities to comply with the 2007 Sexual Orientation Regulations. These laid down that no organisation or company may discriminate against gays.

As a result the adoption agencies were torn between loyalty to Catholic teaching, which forbids any recognition of homosexual partnerships, and the law.

The departure of the charities from the fold of the Church comes at a time of increasing concern among both Catholic and Anglican leaders over growing state intolerance of Christianity.

(edit)

Catholic adoption charities are estimated to accept around £10 million from the state each year, mostly from local authorities. That money would cease to flow if agencies chose to ignore gay rights law.

Battle far from over for those caught between Church and the law -Times Online

"At stake is the principle of whether a charity can, under religious freedom laws, be allowed to break the law on equality and discriminate, in this case against homosexuals. This issue is likely to feature high on the agenda for the new Archbishop of Westminster after his installation next month because it is one of the issues about which he feels most strongly. He is unlikely to let it go, especially as one of the agencies that has not yet given up is in the Westminster archdiocese. "

A personal note:  This is my 1776th thread here at Free Republic, which is of course a very special number for us proud Yanks.  It saddens me greatly that this thread pertains to such an unhappy subject...I would have preferred that my 1776th thread be about something happier and more positive, but the subject matter is one that's important to me and so it goes.  I hope and pray that this matter might be successfully challenged and reversed before any more innocent children are lost to an environment of unspeakable perversion.

Many adoption agencies are caught between the Catholic church and the gay equality laws

They have chosen the path to hell.

Sad, I watched a TV program recently about “how ruthless” the early church (B.C.) was in fighting to follow the Lord’s direction.

Today’s churches bend over and let satan command almost every facet of society. satan has been taking the blood of the innocent for way too long, it’s time the “grown-up” faithful see that evil blood must be let to achieve the Lord’s goals.

The Catholic Church better not give them one dime. They chose to leave the church, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

This is a denial of a fundamental human right — freedom of religion. The Church should not give in on this, but fight it out in the courts. Here in Massachusetts, the church did the same thing. I wish they would instead fight.

No offense, the right thing to do would be to stop taking the state money and keep the ability to adopt to proper couples. They’ve decided they need the money more than their principles.

Maybe they could have sold off some assets and scaled down a bit, gotten rid of some things that weren’t doing much for them, maybe unladen some things that were costing them more to keep than to let go.

Secular incrementalism wins over absolute morals once again. Thanks for fighting the battle hard for our side. /not

How long before the government tells churches they can’t perform weddings unless they agree to cooperate in same-sex “marriages”? Or use Bibles which contain verses condemning homosexual behavior?

my wife was adopted though catholic charities while she was in MA

Now they do not do any kind of adoptions because of the homos forcing them in a lawsuit

sad isn;t it that children will suffer and now the catholic church thinks accepting them is some kind of good thing.

the Pope should recall any priest who goes for the homos and replace the with someone who is willing to teach their faith instead of pandering

the homos biggest threat is a couple

one if all conservatives moved out of the north east and made a strong hold in the swing states and red states

two
religion threatens them and that is why they went after the catholic church in MA so much and sued the priest touching boys as an excuse of course it was not just a problem for the church but also what the media never told anyone is homos , those priests were homo and child molesters

Just an idle thought this Easter Morning when I read this article....perhaps Atheistic Capitalism will prove just as destructive to society and souls as Atheistic Communism....and not last very much longer.

Morals and principles are important.....unless there is money to be had. One whiff of government sanction and the charities spines collapse to keep the handouts.

“They have chosen the path to hell.”

Sadly true and they can NO longer be called “Catholic” adoption agencies.

Exactly. I was talking with some friends who were suggesting Christians totally abstain from state marriages completely and abstain from purchasing marriage licenses. How can the government stop a minister from conducting a wedding ceremony in a private home?

I fully expect the government to criminalize the reading and preaching of Genesis 2, Genesis 19, Leviticus 18:22, Leviticus 20:13, Judges 19:22, 1 Kings 14:24, 1 Kings 15:12, 1 Kings 22:46, Matthew 19:4-6, Mark 7:22, Romans 1:24-27, I Corinthians 6:9-10, and I Timothy 1:10 as “hate speech”.

I don’t see as much atheistic capitalism in the U.K. and the U.S. as I see bona fide, authentic atheistic socialism in both nations. And whatever form of atheism it is, times will continue to get worse.

No longer can Great Brittain or the US state that they have freedom of religion. When churches are FORCED to adopt practices that go against their basic believes, they are no longer free to practice their faith. How quickly and far we have come in the great depravity of mankind.

It already is in Canada. Maybe UK, too. Won't be long before it hits here.

Jesus said, “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s.” That is now to be glossed, “and everything else too.”
