You can only hold out long - cars don’t last forever.
True, but as many people are rediscovering, they last a heck of a lot longer than the 3-4 year lease period after which many used to replace their cars.
I don't know. They are still running around in 1950's cars in Cuba.
I've decided to stockpile old Suburbans to drag me over the finish line.
Yes. I had to replace one that was only 19 years old. And the 13 year old car is probably only good for another 2 or 3 years. If you like nice looking cars in good shape, you probably should put your car on the used market after 15 years or so, no matter how well it is running.
Maybe not forever, but I've been driving the same Ford F150 since 1995 and I'm planing on another decade.
Cheap tags and insurance also :-)
They do if one is unemployed or retired and has nowhere to drive. I have an uncle who retired years ago with a 1984 Pontiac. It's always garaged, and it goes to the grocery store once a week.
Since I retired, I buy gas maybe once a month, and see no reason why the present car will not last ten more years. I had a co-worker whose old Dodge hit 248,000 miles a couple of years ago. It has been repainted, and had a timing chain replaced, but it's still in daily use. 248,000 miles is the approximate distance to the Moon, for a sense of proportion.
I suspect people are realizing that we never NEEDED a new car. We WANTED one. We THOUGHT it was an essential. But present engines and power trains rarely fail any more, and with E-Coated frames, they do not even rust out. If the car I am driving is crushed by a big meteor or something, I'll just replace it for a dime a pound. If Chrysler goes down, those cute PT Cruisers will be real bargains.
