WASHINGTON -- CIA interrogators waterboarded an Al Qaeda prisoner 183 times, according to a 2005 Justice Department legal memo, and another prisoner 83 times, the New York Times reported on Monday.

Quoting the CIA inspector general in a 2004 investigation, the memo from May 30, 2005 says interrogators used the waterboard at least 83 times during August 2002 against Abu Zubaydah, a high-ranking member of Al Qaeda and close associate of Usama bin Laden, the Times said.

In March 2003, the controlled method of simulated drowning was used on Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the admitted mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks that killed nearly 3,000 Americans, 183 times.

The Times said some copies of the memos appeared to have the number of waterboardings redacted while others did not.

More than 100 harsh interrogation methods were used on Mohammed, causing some CIA officers to question if the legal limit had been crossed, the Times previously reported in 2007.

From my point of view, it was just under 2,000 times too little.

Son of a bitch should have been a little more forthcoming. Would have saved him some grief.

“In March 2003... 183 times.”

That’s six times a day every day for a month?

Sounds a bit bizarre to me (maybe a misstatement?)

Waterboarding him 1000 times does not equate to even one life lost on 9/11 because of this filthy muzzie.

I must admit some puzzlement. This is the same guy who was reported to have “broken” after less than 30 seconds of waterboarding. So... which is it?

Wahhh.

He should be waterboarded several times for every death in the 9/11 attacks....and then they should start over at the beginning of the victim list.

Remember the chopper drops used by the South Vietnamese military?

2 Vietcong taken up in a chopper. One is pushed out at about 2000 feet altitude, the other sings like a canary.

And the left thinks that waterboarding interrogation is torture?

These leftist wing nuts do not know WHAT they are talking about.

Waterboarding is interrogation, not torture.

Should have only taken once! But not waterboarding. There is one way that always works. Everytime!

Gee whiz. If he’d have just given up the info, he could have saved himself 182 dunks in the tank.

Idiot.

This the New York Times reporting, so take their reading comprehension skills with a grain of salt.

Here are a few people who would have given anything to be water-boarded at Guantanamo that day.

I must admit some puzzlement. This is the same guy who was reported to have “broken” after less than 30 seconds of waterboarding.

The first time was for information. The other 182 times was just for kicks.

Seriously, the SOB probably did break quickly and confessed some but not all he knew. The CIA probably just wanted to be thorough in squeezing out all possible information.

This is the hole in the argument that either torture or advanced interrogation techniques don't work, in that if a subject lies, it can always be verified and the process will be repeated over and over again until the truth comes out.

I didn't remember that when I posted the article, but after you mention it, that does ring a bell. I believe Michael Hayden (although I wouldn't wager a large sum of money) said something to that effect. It will be interesting to see if there's any clarification on this.

I personally couldn't care less that they water boarded KSM, or anyone else. Water boarding may be against the Geneva convention, but so is the intentional target of civilians. In war you act the way you wish to be treated. We water board - they behead. It's not even a close call for me.

I can tell you one thing, if I were a college student during Finals Week, I’d be accusing my socialist Profs of torture since they are promoting sleep deprivation. ; )

Yeah. I’m wondering, I’m wondering. If it didn’t work the first 100 times ... you know? At any rate, wouldn’t he have gotten used to it? The whole thing is hard to picture.

The traitors that released this information should be identified, tried and then executed for treason.
