Its claim to fame is its name - one of the world's longest.

So you might expect those writing signs to Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg to try extra hard to copy it down correctly.

But it has emerged that directions to the beauty spot have been spelled wrong for years.

They probably tried to use a spell-checker but when they did, their computer overheated.

I actually memorized how to say this. I divided it into parts:
Chargoggagogg
(like Char(coal) + goggagogg)

manchauggaggg
(like Manch(ester)au + goggagogg)

chaubunagungamaugg
(C-B-G: Chau...buna...gunga...maugg)

After practicing a few times I got it down pat. As Wojo
(Wojohowicz)
on Barney Miller used to say, “It’s pronounced just like
it’s spelled...” :)

Isn’t that pronounced Skinny-Atlas? I learned things like
that from Mobil Travel Guide.

And the river near Philly is the Schuykill= “Skoy-kill”
(or, the highway near it, the “Sure-Kill”...)

Charlotte Vermont: Pronounced with the emphasis on the
SECOND syllable (Charl-LOT) for some reason

Toughies in Mass.
Stoneham= “STONE-umm”
Waltham= “WAL-tham” (not Wal-thum)
Worcester= “WISS-tah”
Gloucester= “GLOSS-tah”

Doesn’t that mean “you swim on your side,I’ll swim on my side and no one swims in the middle”.....Used to go boating up there in the 80’s with an ex boyfriend....Nice lake.

Actually, it means: “Casino: next exit on left”. It’s a little known fact.

So, why is Lancaster, PA, pronounced LANK-ester?

And in Louisiana, why is Lafayette pronounced like Laugh-ay-at instead of Law-fay-et?

And in Texas, how do they get “Refurio” out of Refugio?

good questions!

Up in NH there’s a town called Chichester, and I thought it would be pronounced “Chih-ches-tirr” but it was in the news recently and supposedly it’s “CHYY-ches-tirr”

Berlin NH: BERR-linn, not Ber-LYNN

Yeah Mobil Travel Guide, AAA, etc, all mention it.

I understand there’s a place nearby for country (and
other) music concerts, Indian Ranch—been there for years;
think it’s right on the lake

http://www.indianranch.com/

>>Since 1946 Indian Ranch has been a resort and entertainment
venue situated along the shores of historic
Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg
in Webster, Massachusetts. In particular we have become internationally renowned for Country music performances, establishing ourselves as “New England’s Home of Country Music”!
