Michelle Malkin: Civility and Tolerance in the Age of Obama

They told us if Barack Obama were elected, the nation would come together. Souls would be fixed. Spirits would be healed. Public discourse would be elevated. Welcome to civility and tolerance in the Age of Obama:

-- Celebrity leech/trash blogger Perez Hilton took to the Internet and TV airwaves to humiliate a beauty pageant contestant who gave what he considered an “offensive” answer about gay marriage. Hilton, inexplicably serving as a judge for the Miss USA contest, asked Miss California, Carrie Prejean, whether she supported the legalization of gay marriage. Prejean respectfully answered: “I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.” President Obama, by the way, defines marriage the same way Prejean does.

No matter. Hilton immediately lambasted Prejean as a “dumb b*tch” in a viral YouTube video he taped after the pageant Sunday night. He apologized the next morning for the attack, then retracted his apology, then escalated his divisive rhetoric. On Tuesday afternoon, Hilton told an MSNBC female anchor that he was thinking of an even more vulgar epithet—the “c-word”—as he listened to Prejean’s answer. The female anchor said nothing. Basking in his new role as thought and speech enforcer, Hilton told CNN’s Larry King that beauty pageant contestants must bow to the tolerance mob: “Yes. I do expect Miss USA to be politically correct.”

And apparently, the Miss USA organizers agree. Instead of apologizing for Hilton’s vile behavior, the pageant director of the Miss California contest, Keith Lewis, sent a note to Hilton throwing Prejean under the bus: “I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss CA USA 2009 believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman. … Religious beliefs have no place in politics in the Miss CA family.”

I would say that intolerance of a respectfully stated personal belief have no place in the Miss CA family.

The lovely Miss California was set up. They knew of her faith and decided to put her on the spot. If she answered in support of perverted gay marriage, she would have gone against her beliefs. She answered truthfully, which is what they wanted, so they could start their vile attacks.

Religious beliefs have no place in politics in the Miss CA family.

Well, that's going to come as shocking news to the next round of southern and mid-west contingent of contestants.

Sound to me like the LGBT perverts have taken over the whole pageant.

I think you’re right...the judges knew about her beliefs, probably from a contestant questionnaire, and set her up for a fall.

The Supreme Court slammed abortion down our throats as being protected by the constitution, they are now trying to do the same thing with the gay marriage thing.

I for one, will be one of the first, if that happens, to immediately proposed to two women, maybe three.

Then stop asking those kinds of questions, you dumb “b^tch”.....

This is why it won’t work. Too many divisions in our country to be one.

Diversity comes from the root word divide. We have divided our country by embracing diversity. It is no longer American to be an American. I remember reading somewhere that one of our presidents said if we hypenate American with any other thing, we are in trouble basically. Well, here we are. We will hypen american with ANYTHING these days, and dilute what it means to be one.

Below Today’s PC definition of American imho, is as follows:

American-1. Anyone who has the unfortunate circumstance of being born in the worst, most war mongering, hateful, disgusting free market, immigrant hating land EVER. We are TOTALLY SORRY for ever having been born, and having the nerve to do it in America!
2. any brave soul that has the courage to leave their socialist/dictator/communist country and come to this country seeking everything Americans have. Freedom, the highest standard of living in the world, the most amazing people, the best medical care anywhere, free schools, free free free everything for you, housing, food, electric, college, you name it. You don’t even have to be born here, just come here however you can. We are especially fond of sob stories while doing so, so be SURE to make your life seem extra difficult while here, ok??

I have to disagree. I’m pretty sure the questioner was randomly selected by Miss Prejean herself. I also think her answer was poorly communicated. A Miss USA should be able to clearly articulate her opinions, whatever they are.

On the other hand, Perez Hilton shouldn’t have been a judge. What, in particular, qualified him for it? Plus, he cannot apparently engage in civil discourse. Simon Cowell he’s not.

Yes, that is correct. Her “profile,” which the judges used, listed her as going to a Christian college, and working for Christian charities.

So a scumbag pervert bottom feeder like “Perez Hilton” naturally hated her like the devil hates Holy Water.

I should add Perez Hilton is making this all about himself, when, as a judge, it should be entirely about the contestants. The contestant’s communication skills? OK. Hilton’s political agenda? Not proper to push it as part of the pageant. Of course, people like Perez Hilton are like children throwing tantrums. Unfortunately, our society seems to let them get away with it these days.

And that we'd all get a FREE Pony from the gubmint. And I want MY PONY, dammit! Santa gypped me back in 1958 - I've waited long enough!

I did get a shiny new 'tricked out' metallic green & white Schwinn, but that's beside the point. :-)

I think that P. Hilton really expected her to be politically correct and help advance the agenda of the left. I thought he looked disappointed right after she answered. That’s why he was so furious in his video.

And he is right, she COULD have (and most other contestants probably WOULD have) said something more ‘political’ ... such as, “My personal belief is (_______), however, voters should decide in each state.”

That said, I’m very glad she stuck to her guns and answered the question with complete honesty and integrity. And the media is going nuts because once again, someone from the Silent Majority has found a voice and a platform.

This Thought Gestapo was planted into the Miss America pageant. He was there to damage it and further the homo agenda.

This is about Perez Hilton (or whatever his real name is) getting his five minutes of fame. Of course, I’d like to hear why the pageant directors had him as a judge. From his video, one can see that he is full of hate. Most people in this country believe the same way as Miss CA, which is why Chairman 0bama had to go with the flow on this subject.

I am personally saddened and hurt that the Miss USA Pagent is now just another tool of the Dim party.

Congrats to Miss California! I love her attitude of "I was BLESSED to get that question!".

Isn't Hilton guilty of what he is accusing her of?

If he can not respect her thoughts & attitudes, why should she have to respect his?

When did everyone have to start agreeing on all issues?

... Religious beliefs have no place in politics in the Miss CA family.

Part of our problem is that the militant gays have made marriage a political issue, when it's a social one.

That said, I don't think Hilton's idiotic rant has either hurt or diminished Prejean. I saw her on a couple of FoxNews programs and saw that she was dignified, poised, and comfortable. I think she like the rest of us sees Hilton's vile utterings as nothing but inconsequential garbage, and the resultant publicity surrounding this incident will obviously do her more good than harm.

I disagree that it was poorly communicated. While it certainly wasn't the best answer, for beauty contestants (and it should be noted that Miss USA is a beauty contest as opposed to Miss America which is primarily judged on talent and other factors)it was an average answer. I rarely hear any contestant clearly articulate her opinion, particularly on a “controversial” subject.
