Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller is warning the county recorders' offices in his state that workers must process "marriage" licenses for same-sex duos or face possible charges in a court of law.
"If necessary, we will explore legal actions to enforce and implement the court's ruling, working with the Iowa Dept. of Public Health and county attorneys," he warned on his website.
But an announcement today from a statewide pro-family organization and a public interest law firm with a reach that goes around the world means the issue of same-sex weddings eventually could end up back in court.
The statements from Miller relate to the state Supreme Court's decision that Iowa must provide same-sex couples access to the state's marriage processes.
Miller praised the decision as "clear and well-reasoned" and explained it is expected to take effect April 27, since court offices are closed tomorrow.
In a series of messages on his website, he first "advised" recorders and registrars to provide "full access" to marriage.
Then he instructed: "A county registrar should furnish the forms in the same manner as in opposite gender applications."
"The Supreme Court's decision
does change state law: the decision expressly strikes from Iowa Code chapter 595 the language which limits civil marriage to a man and a woman," he ordered.

Well, if they work for the government, they don’t have too much choice.
Except to take the choice to quit.
No better time for civil disobedience.
Turn the tides, folks. Turn the tides.
Here’s my idea; have a trap door at the altar which drops when the I do’s are said. Drop’ng the loving couple into hell.
These poor folks aren’t the ones to take a stand...its up to their fellow citizens to demand a state constitutional ammendment.
Then the supreme court and the state atty gen can go pound sand.
Don’t know about you’all but my side of town is full of this BS. It’s a time for Iowa to take a stand, Ya want to marry queers or not.
Am I to assume that the Iowa AG is Gay himself?
Why else would he be so verbal on this when the citizens of Iowa are absolutely against the union.
The Gaystapo marches on.
We live in Sodom & Gomorrah.
Heil Miller! Obergruppenfuhrer of Iowa.
So when I bring my rich grandmother into the county office to wed, they'd better not say the least thing about it being "illegal."
They certainly do have a choice. This is an issue which people must start pushing back on.
Yes, they can quit.
Yes, they can refuse...and then be terminated.
Or yes, they can hold their noses until they can find other jobs where their morals aren't compromised.
I agree with you in principle. But it's a lot easier to tell somebody to draw a line in the sand than it is to do so yourself.
Suggestion: put yourself in the clerk's shoes. This is an "employer's market" for jobs (particularly government ones), not a "job-seeker's market." Chances are, they have a mortgage (or apartment lease for the same amount as a mortgage), car loan, and credit card debt. Chances also are, they don't have a reserve fund built up (maybe a month or two, but not a full years worth). Maybe a kid or two in college.
That is a WHOLE bunch of pressure on somebody. To voluntarily chuck away a steady job on a principle, especially if you are in the above circumstances, takes major cajones. Solid brass ones.
Somebody who has the stones to stand up for principle when they are in the above situation (which is pretty typical for most of us) deserves our eminent respect.
But before either of us should condemn a person who doesn't have the guts to do so, we should ask ourselves (in all seriousness), would either of us take the very definite risk of joblessness and welfare or joblessness and homelessness to stand up for principle?
Not saying whether you would or wouldn't. Not saying whether I would or wouldn't. But I will say that before falling on my own sword, I would have to consider the above. Very seriously.
Sometimes to be true what is a man’s duty is a harsh choice. I don’t see much of moral difference between that kind of excuse making and that of the officials in Germany and German conquered states in the period Jews were being rounded up for work slavery camps and slaughter.
The moral question is of the same level.
I am suggesting that officials fight it to all the ability they have. In Bulgaria EVERY Jew was saved because the Bulgarian officials dragged every foot they had.
I’m just trying to say (politely, without impinging your character...specially since I don’t know you) that it’s easy to be brave on the Internet; it’s a lot harder in the real world.
seems Iowa stuck ALL limitations to marriage and thus the poligamists should flood to iowa asap.
Not really. But this is a confusing world, and it sure seems harder in real life, but it isn’t.
