Democrat Murphy wins N.Y. House race
The Hill ^ | April 24, 2009 | Reid Wilson

Venture capitalist Scott Murphy (D) will be sworn into Congress next week to fill Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's (D-N.Y.) vacant House seat. Murphy's Republican opponent conceded late Friday.

Assemblyman Jim Tedisco (R) called and congratulated Murphy for a squeaker of a win that took more than three weeks from the March 31 special election to confirm.

"This was a closely contested election that perhaps lasted a little longer than anyone may have expected or wanted," Tedisco said in a statement late Friday. "But it was important for our electoral process and for the hardworking people of upstate New York that it be resolved fairly and decisively."

With the final challenges to absentee ballots concluding on Friday, Murphy led by more than 400 votes with just a few hundred left to be counted, a small enough universe to convince Tedisco that continuing would not reverse the results.

"Ultimately, it became clear that the numbers were not going our way and that the time had come to step aside and ensure that the next congressman be seated as quickly as possible," Tedisco said.

I thought the left believed “every vote should be counted”.

Curious that the Republican quit before every vote was counted in this race. He probably was a RINO like McCain.

It appears as though the people living in this country have decided that they want to move full speed ahead towards Communism. I’ve never been one of “the bad guys” before so I don’t think I’m going to make a good Communist.

The fact in this race are as follow: This seat was won by the democrats in 2006 and in 2008 by a very wide margin. I believe the democrats won it by over 80,000 votes in 2008. In this special elections the democrats won it by 400 votes. The question is why the democrats lost 76,600 votes in this race?

My opinion on this race (I live within walking distance of the district) has been unpopular around here, but Tedisco deserved this. WE didn’t lose anything. An incompetent candidate shot himself in the foot repeatedly.

Maybe that big tent thing wasn’t such a good idea after all.

It could have been won in a walk and Tedisco threw it away. He shouldn’t have even broken a sweat, but he seemed to be trying to lose the race.

Maybe there is something out there that is getting ready to boil over. I sure hope so. Thanks for that info. It makes this kind of crap a little easier to swallow.

Why it should have been a walk for Tedisco? Why an electorate that voted for the democrat by an 80,000 margin in November 2008 was going to give a victory for a Republican in March 2009? No, the district does not have a big Republican registration advantage as so many people said. This district turned deep blue in 2006 and 2008 and now it is purple.

Which doesn’t necessarily suggest that Tedisco was a great candidate but that people in New York may be getting pretty fed up with the current bunch of Democrats who are running things.

Unfortunately, Andrew Cuomo seems to be working hard at tidying himself up and being a fearless prosecutor with past corruption well buried. I suspect he will be the next gubanatorial candidate. I thinkk the current governor was a PC gesture who was never expected to get anywhere near the levers of power.

I think Guiliani will defeat Cuomo in the New York Governor race.

It should have been a walk, because this is a conservative district. Gillibrand was a conservative democrat. At least, she played that card repeatedly anyway. This district WANTED to vote for Tedisco, but when he hesitated to take a position on the bailout bill, he lost the race. He revealed himself to be just another politician and frankly, conservatives won’t accept that. They’ll just shut off on you or vote for the other guy if you don’t show some gonads.

Some people find this to be a foreign concept, but it’s pretty obvious when you look at it.

Gillibrand was a conservative democrat

Please explain to me how she was a conservative? Was she more conservative than the Republican candidates who run against her?

An incompetent candidate shot himself in the foot repeatedly.

The GOP has got to immediately recruit young articulate good looking energetic conservative candidates... unlike the old-boy next-in-line idiocy of the McCain-Dole-Tedisco type thinking.

The Democrats made a concerted effort beginning after 2004 to recruit ONLY young military-experienced aggressive candidates ... and it has been successful for them (but detrimental for America).

The GOP is light years behind in email and Internet interaction.

Unless the RNC wakes up and installs youngish people to positions of power, the GOP will continue to be the party of slow out of touch fogies.

She won the first time because the Republican incumbent and his wife liked to beat each other in the presence of state troopers.

She pretended to be conservative and that is well documented. Her opponent in 2008 was lame and ran as more of a liberal than she could ever have run as.

She was a phony, but people didn’t realize that until she left the district. Unfortunately, Tedisco was a joke at playing on that.

Age doesn’t matter. The GOP needs candidates who say what they mean and mean what they say. If they shed any doubt on that, they lose. Period. It’s really that simple.
