On Wednesday, September 24, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., phoned Reid and told him, Harry, I am suspending my campaign to come back and help negotiate a deal. McCain explained that he was also calling upon Obama to suspend his campaign, and together they could convene a meeting at the Bush White House to help come to a deal on a bailout for Wall Street.
Reid didn't think it was such a great idea...
"They were on the verge of an agreement, and any such McCain stunt would cost us valuable time," writes Reid, also noting that McCain "had no standing to do any such negotiating. He was neither a member of the pertinent committees, nor did he have any particular expertise, nor was he of influence with rebellious Republicans who were openly opposing the plan."
John, please dont come," Reid says he told the GOP presidential nominee. . . . . . "We need leadership; not a campaign photo op."
Thats how I feel, John," Reid said.
I hope youll reconsider, Harry, McCain responded.
Almost immediately, Reid writes, he got another call, this time from then-Sen. Obama.
"Harry, whats John up to?" Obama said. "It sounds crazy."
. . . . .
"And then, as the meeting that he had called disintegrated into acrimony and disunion, John McCain remained silent," Reid writes.

I honestly believe if McCain had come out strongly against the initial $400 billion stimulus, the race would’ve gone to McCain, or at minimum been far, far closer than it was. As it was, with both sides agreeing on what was the biggest issue of the day, people saw no reason to vote for old, staid McCain vs. young, fresh Obama.
McCain has to call Reid to get permission to come to the Senate? Good grief!
Obama didn't even recognize McCain's pre-concession speech.
And, presumably, with a straight face.
At the very least McLame should have said “THIS CAN WAIT 6 WEEKS UNTIL THE ELECTIONS ARE OVER to avoid making it a political issue”
But McLame was ... lame.. on the issue
This one comes with a barf alert.
Rabs, the more that comes out about this campaign, the more our worst fears become realized.
McManchurianCandidate was out to lose this campaign by any means necessary. And with the Democrat voting Steve Schmidt run- ning his campaign,he had extra assistance.
This one needs a projectile vomiting alert.
Just imagine if McCain would have voted against it. We wouldn’t be in the mess we are in right now because Obama would have also voted against it. He would have had to. That is why when they took the vote, McCain went first.
McCain could have changed the way this whole bailout and world economy outlook. I know that sounds crazy but it is the truth.
‘I have a gift, Harry.’
Talk about narcissism!
Snicker...!
Yep, and that why he and his staff repeatedly tried to shove Sarah Palin under the bus, since she had no intention of going down without a fight.
McCain’s pre-concession speech
.
Yep, reminded me of Ross Perot dropping out and getting back in
I agree that McCain made a big mistake by bumbling the opportunity to actually be a ‘Maverick’ and vote against the robery of the taxpayers. Alas he proved beyond a doubt to many voters that he is just another POS politician.
This fool McCain will never get another chance.
Yep. That was another one of those "terminal" errors that made the outcome inevitable.
Don’t ask me why, but I strangely find this rendition utterly believable. We know parts of it are true, and the parts we don’t have proof of, sound like the only course McCain could have taken, if his goal was to do what he did.
So here I am for the first time in my life, thinking this description of Reid’s take on this, sounds very credible. Imagine, thinking Reid has credibility on an issue. Good grief.
And then you realize, it’s regarding our resident turn coat and Marxist/Fascist enabler.
McLame had all the appearances of a man deliberately trying to take a dive.
McCain should have said hell no.
I think the mob got to him.
