COLUMBUS, N.M. This dusty little border town with almost no visible means of support has been seeing something of a boom in the past year: Brand-new Lincoln Navigators and Cadillac Escalades with flashy wheel rims are parked just off the bleak main drag. Homes are selling quickly, sometimes for cash.
The source of this sudden wealth? An influx of Mexican drug smugglers, investigators say.
The smugglers are fleeing the Mexican army's occupation of the town of Palomas, on the other side of the U.S.-Mexico border fence, and settling in Columbus, where there has been a law enforcement vacuum. The four-man police force in Columbus has turned over seven times in three years because of scandal or apathy.

Bill Richardson is Gubinor of New Mexico.
“There’s a lot of people who don’t work but have a lot of possessions,” Odom said, adding that he often spots local teens driving fancy new cars. “They have hubcaps that cost more than my truck.”
sure it’s not Columbus Ohio, home of the flaming couch?
Then the investigators should arrest them.
You have to wonder how drug dealers get residency papers that allow them to live in the U.S. Where is ICE? Where is the DEA? Where is the IRS? Where are the Treasury money-laundering police? It has to be an open secret who they are. Why are they allowed to settle in our country? The real estate woman is a real piece of work. She “wondered” how they got the money to pay cash for a house? What about the law requiring that all transactions over $10,000 be reported? And the people there think it’s all hunky dory. Wait til the kidnapping and murder starts. They will be screaming bloody murder.
Pancho Villa is back!
Sounds like La Raza’s plan to takeover the United States is kicking into high gear.
Wow. Google street view has the place in all its /cough/ glory.
Have heard there are pockets of growth amidst the down turned economy.
And they are trying to support Detroit!
Maybe it’s time to bring Petraeus to the border and I’m not talking about the Pakistan/Afghan border and commence action.
Columbus looked like a more hospitable place than Manhattan to me.
The answer to "Who in our government (at all levels) is on the payroll?" might go a ways to answering your questions. Their malfeasance is brazen and willful, and beyond the smattering of rapacious ideologues, and greedy business interests, I can see no better reason for it.
To each his own. :)
You could bomb Columbus for three days straight and not notice a difference. No wonder Pancho Villa gave it back.
I remember when land around Columbus sold for about $50 an acre. My dad bought a bunch of land there, put up a house and some out buildings, where he could look at the sunsets and shoot rattle snakes. When he died, my mother unloaded it for nothing. Maybe she should have held onto it for some of that drug money.
