President Shimon Peres wants to give up Israeli sovereignty over key Christian holy sites to the Vatican, according to an Army Radio report Monday, a proposition which is reportedly opposed by Interior Minister Eli Yishai.
According to the report, the issue ruffled feathers among senior Israeli officials.
Beit Hanassi could not be reached for comment, as it does not issue statements to the press while the president is abroad.
Army Radio said that the president was exerting pressure on the government to give up sovereignty over six sites including the Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth, the Coenaculum on Mount Zion, the Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, and the Church of the Multiplication on the Kinneret.

I wouldn’t think the Vatican would want that. Put’s them in charge of defending them.
This may be smart politics. Of course the Muslim fanatics won’t go for this, and it will then extend the issue beyond an Arab-Israeli issue.
The spiritual center of the Catholic church is moving back to Jerusalem, very good to see.
Is the Vatican army going to station troops there? Not sure what the practical value is.
not good. sets a precedent for turning over the Temple Mount to the PA. That would mean the Mount would be forever lost to Jews.
It could, however blow up in their faces, depending on how evangelical christians react. The sites should be handed over to a christian coalition..not just one representation of christianity. Just my two cents.
bad idea - if this pope or a future pope gets a tude at Israel, they could just turn those sites over to someone els who has Islamic sympathies.
What is the Church of the Multiplication? Loaves and Fishes multiplication? That’s a new one on me.
The Vatican would certainly not want to open up the sites to any rituals but its own. The Israelis were at least attempting to be fair to all claimers.

Evangelicals are not interested in the ugly bickering that goes on between various Catholic and Orthodox groups over the holy sites. That’s why they pass on Holy Sepulcher and hang out at the Garden Tomb (Yes, I know, it’s not The Place, but at least they don’t have to get into a boxing match with some monks in order to worship the Risen Lord).
Well, for starters, you have a “Christian Coalition” in charge of some of the sites, NOW!
(They do not always get along very well)

It is a bad move to give YHvH's Land to anyone except YHvh's chosen people.shalom b'SHEM Yah'shua HaMashiach
Sounds as if Israel is actively thinking about existing sans America.
Must be part of a set of four basilicas—Church of the Addition, Church of the Subtraction, Church of the Multiplication, and Church of the Division.
LOL

I agree.
Thanks for the info. I have always wanted to visit there one day. Now I will know where to ‘hang out’ if I ever make it there. (grin)
Thanks for the link.
It just shows how ignorant the Israelis are about Christianity. The RCC does not represent Christianity as a whole.
