Chris Simcox wants to dethrone McCain [McCainiacs bashing Simcox]

Many Arizona conservatives would like nothing more than to see Sen. John McCain knocked off in a Republican primary.

But few of them think Chris Simcox, the controversial founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps who recently announced he would challenge McCain, is a serious threat to do it.

Despite Simcox’s high-profile leadership on illegal immigration on the state’s southern border — a potent issue in the state’s Republican primary — party insiders say the 48-year-old former grade school teacher carries a heavy load of personal baggage and faces ample skepticism from rank-and-file Republican voters.

“I’m very unhappy with Sen. McCain. He’s pretty much spit in our eye,” said Dennis Durband, a conservative activist and editor of a website called The Arizona Conservative. “But I really don’t think [Simcox] is going to get any serious traction. There’s so much baggage in his past.”

Potentially more damaging is Simcox’s portrayal in a 2005 Southern Poverty Law Center report that draws on court documents from a previous marriage to paint him as “drastic, violent and dangerous.”

The SPLC really ought to stop confusing McCain with Simcox.

“Simcox’s timing is a little off. Arizona is one of the least diversified economies in the country. We’re swimming in red ink. Who is picking Arizona’s lettuce is not as big an issue anymore,” DeMenna said.

Aw. How cute. Now that we have a recession, Americans will pick lettuce for less than $50/hour too!

“I think McCain’s a disgrace,” said Haney. “He’s not straight talk. He’s fork-tongued talk.”

So, are we going to see the RINO-loving GOP leadership rally around the RINO that is McCain, similar to what they’re trying to do in Pennsylvania?

Will this EVER end???? WAKE UP, GOP!!!! RINOs ARE NOT THE ANSWER!!!!

They've got it backwards. McCain has a heavy load of personal baggage and faces ample skepticism from rank and file voters. For that matter, the "party insiders" have pretty much lost faith with rank and file Repub voters.

I put McCain in the same league with Specter. If that is what party insiders think is a Republican, we need new party insiders.

I have some doubt about Simcox, to be honest. I have no doubts about McCain.

McCain must go, but there has to be a competent horse to run against him.

Conservative Arizona Republicans, please find someone to rid us of McCain. He’s not just screwing your state, unfortunately.

Meandog, what you say about Simcox?

I say more power to Simcox...I'm sending money to him too.

“party insiders say the 48-year-old former grade school teacher carries a heavy load of personal baggage and faces ample skepticism from rank-and-file Republican voters.”

And by ‘party insiders’ we,of course, mean The Politico/Wash Post writers and editors.

I kinda didn’t know there were any “McCainiacs”, besides Lindsay Grahamnesty, Cindy and Meghan. I thought he was the default guy.

This is disturbing.

How long before McCain sees the internal Poll numbers and switches parties?

Let’s start a pool I take 9/11/09.

Not an Arizonan, but I sure hope they find some true conservative alternative to Juan McCain. Simcox probably isn't the one, and I'm still hoping for J. D. Hayworth, or maybe some capable conservative in Arizona I've never heard of.

I've got some questions about Simcox too, but until he gets into a "my friend-off" competition with Mac, he's got my vote.

It's well Past time for John to call it day and, like, Totally take like, Meghan With Him!

My first inclination was to support Simcox. Then someone I respect mentioned that he wasn’t too good beyond the border issue.

We need someone who is a died in the wool Conservative. I want it to come from the heart, and I want their actions to indicate that across the board.

When our illustrious (C) [supposedly] presidents/senators/congressmen do things like support leftist policy without knowing, it’s even more destructive than when the Democrats do it. It destroys our brand.

McCain has got to go. I am desperately hoping there is someone out there who knows what the Conservative stance on most issues should be, and agrees with it.

I have the same concerns relative to Simcox, which is why I'd Really like to see Jeff Flake challenge Mac.

I doubt That will happen though. So Simcox is the guy, for the moment.

Someone seems to be mounting a “draft Arpaio” effort. What are the objections to Sheriff Joe?

McCain absolutely has to be thrown out but I think there may be better alternatives than Simcox.

That article had a lot of different Arizona GOP and conservative leaders quoted. A lot ofthe are no way McCainiacs. Simcox is not an ideal candidate. Pointing that out does not make someone a McCainiac. That said, if no other serious conservative (Hayworth, Arpaio, Flake) steps up, Simcox will get the conservative money and votes.

It is past time for the current generation of GOP career politicians to GO!

They have aided an abetted the Rats in the near (an probably inevitable) destruction of this once-great Nation.
