Q & A: 'Joe the Plumber'

Posted on 05/05/2009 8:38:54 AM PDT by PurpleMan

Why does conservatism appeal to you as a Christian?

Conservatism is about the basic rights of individuals. God created us. As far as the government goes, the Founding Fathers based the Constitution off of Christian values. It goes hand-in-hand. As far as the Republican Party? I felt connected to it because individual freedom should not be legislated by the federal government....

In the last month, same-sex marriage has become legal in Iowa and Vermont. What do you think about same-sex marriage at a state level?

At a state level, it's up to them. I don't want it to be a federal thing. I personally still think it's wrong. People don't understand the dictionary—it's called queer. Queer means strange and unusual. It's not like a slur, like you would call a white person a honky or something like that. You know, God is pretty explicit in what we're supposed to do—what man and woman are for....

OK. He's a nice guy who had a minor impact, but his time's up.

To have Christianity Today prop him up as some sort of philosophical and political maven as if he speaks and, more importantly, is able to speak for them and anyone associated with conservatism is a disservice to them and the movement.

He's to conservatism what Joel Osteen is theology.

He was the regular guy who asked the candidate a question and got his life ripped apart by the Democrat party.

McCain brought two non political people to the forefront of the debate last year. Those two were Joe and his ditsy daughter. I just wish his daughter would shut up. The political class want Joe to shut up. He's not from a high brow family and has no connections.

I don’t mind news outlets interviewing nobodies every once in a while. If it amounts to propping them up, so be it. It’ll be a counterweight for all the celebs who get to tell us their opinions for no good reason.

It would be better, yes, if they’d steer clear of quasi-celebs like Joe the Plumber. To pick someone who’s already famous does imply his opinion matters. I’d prefer it if they’d close their eyes and point to a name in the phone book.

Why try to demonize JTP? He has his POV and he is a free citizen of this nation and has the right to his opinion just like you & I. You don’t agree, so what.
