A proposal to make diplomas issued in Tennessee home schools have the same weight as those given by public schools has likely cleared its last major hurdle.

So my kids' homeschooling will be worthless, too?

“However, Bell said some of his constituents who were home-schooled have not been able to get or keep jobs such as auctioneers, police officers and day-care workers because state laws require those workers have a high school diploma.”

A good move by the Tennessee Ledge in that now home-schooled graduates will now be able to work as peace officers and daycare workers.

In Florida it’s not a problem. I homeschooled and we also did dual credit during high school. So at the end of 12th grade, my son had earned his AA...but couldn’t receive an AA w/out a high school diploma. I signed an affadavit, saying he was a homeschool student, I was his teacher, and I was certifying he had earned a diploma and submitted it to the college, they accepted it and marked H.S. diploma at the top of his transcript for his AA. He went on to get his B.A. and another University and is about to finish his Master’s at yet another univeristy. We’ve never been questioned about it and he had no problem getting accepted into either school, so I’m assuming it holds the same weight as a public school diploma.

As a former HR person who interviewed hundreds if not thousands over my career.....I’d probably have given more weight to a homeschooled applicant.....in fact, I remember one time a gal apologizing for her G.E.D....my response...it proves you were motivated enough to do it on your own!!!

My son graduated college this morning, all the places he applied accepted his homeschool diploma.

Silly move and more government overreaching. Why not just eliminate the standards originally legislated.

Merit should be the rule and the free market the proving ground.

No, the state should be able to mandate that police officers and daycare workers have a high school diploma.

And yes, colleges should be free to accept or reject students according to merit standards.

How does a HS diploma make for better police or daycare work?

>>No, the state should be able to mandate that police officers and daycare workers have a high school diploma.<<

What exactly do you mean by a High School diploma?
One from a local Public School eventhough those kids are finishing 12th grade doing the same work my 11 year old is doing at home?

That diploma?

Actually, that’s fine with me. The world needs “ditch diggers too” I guess.

Because they have already be given the “PC test”.

You are wise.

The whole purpose of homeschooling is to remove the government from the child and the process.

I don’t think this law does that. It simply provides a means for future meddlers to intervene with a law they like.

There has to be some standard and the state or a company should be able to refuse to hire a person who cannot for whatever reason complete high school.

Yes, the world needs both ditch diggers and daycare workers and if this law passes, home-school graduates will not be denied access to these jobs.

There has to be some standard [how about merit?] and the state [too political and subject to whim] or a company [anybody] should be able to refuse to hire a person who cannot for whatever reason complete high school.

Could you live with those changes?
