The Republican Party is not an endangered species but can do a better job of outreach, recruiting candidates and getting the message out, Sen. John McCain said Sunday.
In an appearance on ABCs This Week, McCain responded to a question referring to a story in Time magazine, describing the party as in distress.
I probably would not go that length, McCain said. We all work in cycles for many years. We have seen parties down and parties up. Thats a great thing about American politics.
But having said that, do we have to do a better job of getting our message out? Do we have to do a better job recruiting candidates? Do we have to do a better job of outreach? Outreach to many Americans that dont feel that they can be part of our party? Absolutely. Absolutely.

I think weve got to broaden our enlarge our tent and at the same time stick to our fundamental principles which are right of center, he said.
McCain is a political chameleon.

He doesn’t want an inclusive party. He wants a party where the right is seen but not heard.
Yes. I want to belong to a party that is both for and against abortion, both for and against fiat money, both for and against open borders, both for and against Communist health care...
John McCain, loser.
McCain's "message" is the problem. And his being a backstabbing crotchety old curmudgeon doesn't help much, either.
Shut up, John. Go away.
I don’t think anyone really thinks McCain will be in charge of leading the party or formulating it’s strategy at any time, so to the degree that he appeals to moderates which can help push us over the 50% mark and he fascinates the media, so be it...it really doesn’t matter what he says if you ask me. We’ve seen the results of his style of leadership, and with all due respect, it was not successful. The Reagan/Gingrich models stand and McCain can come along for the ride or ride off into the sunset, either way, conservatives know the winning strategy.
Our principles are the center, John! We stand firm with the Constitution!
That is, until some Demoscumbag starts squealing and oinking about it, and then, McCain as usual, like a suit from a can, will crumple into a little ball, and start apologizing for being alive.
Republican party via McCain is a ‘tent’ intended to sequester multiple visions for the country in a continually ineffective institution with no unified vision in constant debate for possible focus sometime in the future.....James Carville thinks they have at least 40 years to come to some decision.....he may be right.
Does he have any idea what kind of damage he’s inflicting on the nation...?
Go home and stay away from a microphone, John.
McCain is the Adlai Stevenson of the Republican Party.
He wants us right where we are. Nowhere.
Really, really dumb stuff from a guy who flirted with the Democrats.
If only bad candidates would go away quietly like in the old days.
All this GOP hand wringing is getting tiresome, so here’s something obvious that every one seems to overlook: The GOP didn’t defeat itself (other than by running a soft moderate like McCain); the thing that put democrats in the White House and running congress was simple old fashioned salesmanship. Yeah, marketing, mixed with good timing. Basic flim flam. Pop culture.
You take a nation tired of the relentless MSM attacks on Bush/Cheney, run a half black candidate who promises change without any definition, imply that his win will absolve America of it’s sin of slavery, get the entire media onboard with the full cooperation of Hollywood, the music industry, TV, network news and all of education... it would be pretty hard NOT to win.
The real surprise is that 46% of America held out for the old man McCain in the face of such a steamroller of ridicule. Every Entertainment pretty boy and hot girl was out savaging Palin and calling McCain an old fool who couldn’t check his email. Oprah put her full force behind Obama, Soros wrote enormous checks, McCain sabotaged his own campaign by marginalizing his only asset (Palin), the entire nation was told that to be in the cool clique you voted Obama.... it’s a wonder it wasn’t a 90 to 10 democrat win!
In a nation trained to worship popularity, McCain never stood a chance. This rush to “fix” the Republican party is just another wishful hoax. There’s nothing wrong with the GOP that a couple years of dangerous democrat mismanagement of power can’t fix. While Obama’s protectors are extra stubborn, he’s not invincible. MSM protection only works for so long.
Remember Carter and Clinton were both propped up by a cheerleading press, but before long even the drones realized that America needed to put adults back in charge. Reagan after Carter and Bush 43 after Clinton, let’s call it the American self-cleansing mechanism. The GOP will morph into the perfect foil to match the mess. Tea parties will help as will FR and Fox News and AM radio. Patience, folks! This talk of mending the “tent” is silly.
This Pelosi/Obama/Reid mad rush to state power seems bad, to us Freepers and AM talk radio fans it seems obvious, but it’ll have to get REAL BAD for Joe Public to toss democrats out in anger... and they will. No, we will NOT take advice from the big media, McCain or his daughter, Colin Powell or the Dixie Chicks. No thanks, we’ll find our own representatives. It’s not rocket science.
We will listen to sober debates from our trusted friends, from a few good congress critters, from Rush and Hannity and Beck and Levin, we’ll read Steyn and Coulter and Charon and Elder and many others. We’ll keep an eye out for solid conservative newcomers, this Obama era will be a red blip in the long view. A childish tantrum. The mess: an unintended consequence of well-intended populist emotion. The inauguration WAS quite a celebration, even though I was personally simmering.
Populism gained strength over 30 years, the baby boomers who took control proved to be just as conformist as their hated parents. No big surprise. Emotion controls most citizen’s voting actions, and most of America WANTED this shiny new symbol of diversity and progressivism. I’m not a bit shocked.
Despite my cynical words, I’m actually optimistic for America. We are, eventually, a center-right nation. We like it here, and we’d like our grandkids to enjoy the place as much as we did. The GOP is just fine, stop navel gazing. Events will put conservatives ( not to be confused with current republicans) in the catbird seat. Very soon.
