WASHINGTON, May 11, 2009 – An American soldier suspected in involvement in the shooting deaths of five U.S. servicemembers today in Baghdad is in U.S. custody, defense officials said.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. local time at the U.S. military base Camp Liberty in the Iraqi capital. Defense officials characterized the killings as an unexpected tragedy.

“Any time we lose one of our own, it affects us all,” said Army Col. John Robinson, Multinational Corps Iraq spokesman. “Our hearts go out to the families and friends of all the servicemembers involved in this terrible tragedy.”

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman called the shooting an “unexpected and tragic event,” adding that the incident is under investigation.

The names of the deceased are being withheld pending next-of-kin notification and release by the Defense Department.

I hear this happened at one of the military counseling centers in Baghdad. No doubt this young man may have just been very stressed...there is so much we don’t have information on.

Counseling center? If the majority of victims were female, I can only imagine how the press will try to spin it to demoralize the public.

I’m thinking if Samuel Lapp from Lancaster County, PA did this, they’d have released his name by now.

No name. Indicates Sudden Jihad Syndrome to me.

To me it indicates that they have not yet informed the families yet.

I would rather not learn of my relatives death via the newspaper if you don't mind.

I am thinking that his name begins with an “m” and ends with a “d”.

So because they haven’t released the name of the person in custody, it indicates they haven’t notified the victim’s families yet?

That is some powerful logic. What does naming the person in custody have to do with notifying families? How would naming the person in custody identify any of his/her victims? Either you can’t read very well or you’re trying a little misdirection.

They have not notified all the families yet.

Is that clear enough for you?

They have not informed the families...AND IF the person was seeking counseling at the counseling center or was in some sort of psychological treatment/evaluation, then privacy laws also apply ...so the name of the one in custody would not be released.

What is the rush? Only the MSM wants to rush right out with this story..I find it honorable that the military is not complying with their demands.

the majority of those seeking counseling in Iraq of our military are men. That’s because also the females are a smaller percentage of military there.
