Last week, 78 United States Senators voted in favor of the Serve America Act, which will spend $5.7 billion over the next five years to pay people, and in many cases force them, to volunteer. I was not one of the senators voting for this measure. For all its overwhelming bipartisan support, Serve America is about as dangerous a piece of legislation as can even be contemplated.
What makes America America is not our government or economy, but our civil society. It is those organizations, the little platoons of democracy, that really make our nation go: The Boy Scouts, United Way, church socials, food drives, and little leagues.
While our large institutions continue to let us down in Washington and New York our civic, charitable, and religious organizations thrive. These organizations make our country better, to be sure, but that is mostly because they make us freer. They meet needs and solve problems without inviting the bull of government into the china shop of our local communities.
Our Founding Fathers understood this. They empowered the federal government to do a few things only, with the understanding that individuals, families, and small voluntary associations would take care of the rest. After all, smaller government requires bigger citizens. Alexis de Tocqueville of France captured this essential American creed when he visited the young United States in the 1830s: They [Americans] do not deny that every man may follow his own interest; but they endeavor to prove that it is the interest of every man to be virtuous.
It is out of virtue, after all, that one leads a Scout troop, teaches Sunday school, or coaches a little league team. The virtue motivating these activities and millions like them around the country is like a stone thrown

*Bump*
Senator De Mint gets it.
Can we see the list of the Republicans that voted for this?
It's a cookbook! A COOKBOOK!
Paying people to volunteer? That sounds like a contradiction of terms.
When I saw the headline, “Serve America”, I HAD to open the thread. Of course, I wasn’t disappointed, freepers never miss a slow pitch like that. ROFLMAO
"Read my lips, no new laws!!"
Now that is someone I will vote for. There are already too many laws on the books. It's time to systematically repeal most of them and return freedom to Americans!
It's like paying the Tea Party people to stay home and watch CNN!

It sounds like Obama wants the biggest plantation ever.
Apparently this is an old story that just reached the Canada Free Press

Sorry for that.
Obama is running around saying we are out of money. Can’t they just cancel this type of stuff?

Well..there’s a RINO list if I ever saw one...
The Serve America Act will be used to kill charities and volunteer organizations that Obama’s buddies don’t like, or that don’t toe the line.
Kids will flock to the Serve America “charitable organizations” to get the perks and bennies promised to them.
The other organizations will be stifled through lack of volunteers.
Once the “bad old charitables” are seriously hurt, the perks and bennies will dry up and the clamp tightened.
In the House version of the bill there were provisions to study ways to make volunteerism mandatory. The Senate split that out, it’s a separate bill, but the Congress and White House is still working on ways to make volunteerism a requirement.
If this is allowed to go on, only Stalinist organizations will remain, doing the good work of keeping the party in power over all else.
Those of us who are veterans or have retired from the Armed Forces have “Served America”!
My church supports most things that the current Govt. is against. Just our stance and that won't change no matter what. Organizations that support our country and way of life, we are for and support. All others we reject out right. No matter what popular opinion is.
Second that.
Self Reliant/Survivalist ping list
It will be staffed by inept young people who can’t find a job or don’t want a job — probably living still with their parents. They will take whatever task is given them and pursue it with the same enthusiasm they applied to every other task they’ve been given— none. They will sit around with their equally inept friends on the porch & fill out the required paperwork while they fill up their pipes. The government will get falacious data but no one will notice. They will parrot whatever replies they have been programed. They will wear spiffy unis.
They will vote for their paycheck.
