US to sell bunker-buster bombs to South Korea

The United States has agreed to sell "bunker-buster" bombs to South Korea that are capable of destroying underground facilities in North Korea, a military official said Tuesday.

Washington recently approved the sale of GBU-28 bombs, which were used during the 1990-91 Gulf War to destroy underground command centres in Iraq, a defence ministry official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The laser-guided bombs, which could be used to hit North Korean missiles and aircraft stored underground, will be delivered to South Korea between 2010 and 2014, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported.

Myself I think they should use enough munitions to create the Korean Canal, a quarter mile wide canal along the DMZ.

It was planned at one point many years ago that a canal across Central America north of Panama could be built using nuclear munitions.

The South needs to be able to wipe out the North’s artillery in one swell foop. Enough MOABs in synchrony, and maybe it can achieve the goal.

How about a wider distribution so as not to leave anyone out? Ship a few to the Free Cuba Group in Miami, couple of truck loads to the Anti-Chavez Coalition in Columbia, and maybe a full week’s production to Israel. Did I leave anyone out?

Let’s hope that isn’t too late...

Israel needs bunker bombs. Why doesn’t the CEO of GM Barack Obama ship a few of those bad boys over to them. Oh, he hates Israel, I forgot.

“I think we need to sell to Israel!”

Would you consider a lend/least program?

We lend Israel our least valuable assets to reside there for one year (I don’t know what we would have to offer in return though)

I agree. I don’t understand why it would take this long to deliver these. I certainly don’t know the numbers, but I assume US currently has an ample stockpile of these weapons. Why wouldn’t we start transfer some of these from our own stockpile—which presumably could begin ASAP—and then steadily replace these during the 2010-2014 time-frame? I’m not proposing that we completely void our own stockpile, simply that we draw it down by some reasonable amount (25%? 33%?) so that SK is not caught completely flat-footed.

At some level, the current announcement increases the odds of NK attack since it’s basically signaling that SK will be far better positioned to repel an attack in 2010 and beyond. It would have seemed preferable to first transfer 10-20 such weapons (I have no idea what a reasonable number might be since I don’t know how many NK targets might require this capability to be reliably taken out) and THEN announce after-the-fact that SK had this capability and that it would continue to be beefed up over the next 4 years. But perhaps Obama wants an NK attack in 2009 so that people will rally behind him and give him that much more popularity with which to pursue a radical domestic agenda.

Israel was removed from the shipping list on January 20, 2009. Any future munitions for Israel will be delivered by other means.
