An 8-year-old New Mexico boy has died and his 10-year-old sister was hospitalized after both contracted bubonic plague, the first recorded human plague cases in the nation so far this year.

Plague is generally transmitted to humans through the bites of infected fleas, but also can be transmitted by direct contact with infected animals, including rodents, rabbits and pets.

Symptoms of the bubonic form of the plague in humans include fever, chills, headaches, vomiting, diarrhea and swollen lymph nodes in the groin, armpit or neck areas. Pneumonic plague, which is an infection of the lungs, can include severe cough, difficulty breathing and bloody sputum.

I had a friend die of the plague in CO about 25 years ago. She was a beautiful young lady. Ran over a squirrel, felt bad, removed it from the road and contracted the plague from it.

It’s a flea thing, and there are a few deaths in this part of the country every year. Has nothing to do with illegals.

Plague would never be spread by Norwegians, Swedes maybe, but not Norwegians. By the time the Plague got to Northern Norway, the infection rate dropped to zero %. Those folks just don't get it, nor spread it.

Plague, BTW, is available throughout the world. It's carried by the fleas on rats.

If you're real concerned make sure to provide a good rattle snake to patrol your lawn.

Isn't it curious how we (the United States) continues its slide to 3rd world status due to our governmental policies that drive us downward?
Terrorists, Crime, Violent Crime, Gangs, Disease, Lawlessness, Illegal Aliens.
And which party who would you consider responsible for this lax collapse

Gee whiz!

What's Paul Shanklin's joke about road kill? Just eat around the tire tracks.

Health threads can get rather embarassing on FR with all the ill-informed comments passing around, well, like the plague, so I'm including this link to the CDC in case someone is interested in learning something.

Plague has been endemic in NM for more than a century. There were even outbreaks in San Francisco. It’s not rare at all, it just doesn’t usually cross over to humans unless the humans do something unusual that brings them into contact with the fleas. Often, folks see a recent dead critter and mess with it. Say, a dead coyote. And those fleas are just waiting for the next warm host to jump onto.

Now that's not gonna' happen until they come down with Bubonic.

"Through a Glass Darkly" is a darned good book to read. Tuchman filled it with a massive number of facts including everything that passed for news in a modern sense.

Unfortunately we have people in the United States who continue to believe that The Plague affected only Europe and Asia and only in the Good Old Days.

Still, worse than Bubonic is Hanta Virus. That one doggone near erradicated humanity from the Americas!

Camping in the western states, especially in the Four Corners area. I recall an outbreak in the prairie dog population in South Dakota about eight years ago. I was careful to keep rodents away from my stuff when visiting the Badlands. Just common sense.

.
Why are you surprised that this is happening? The whole idea of global government is for all countries to hold hands while sitting in a bathtub in each other’s filth, singing kumbayah.

After WWII, the US was top dog and had no equal among the nations. This didn’t sit well with the newly created UN and the idea was created to make all nations equally influential in world affairs.

The idea was to raise 3rd world nations to the level of European and American standards. This being an impossibility, we decided to come down to their level by allowing extensive immigration from these countries — so now we have all become 3rd world nations. And everyone is happy sitting in each other’s sh*t.

Kumbayah, y’all.

Again, help me out here . . . are we talking about immigration of mice, or fleas?

Can't argue with your assertion.

But this particular death has no bearing on it. In parts of high desert New Mexico, plague is endemic. It's never been fully eradicated from the animal population.

Usually, there are a few cases every year.
