Danville Police say an officer was acting properly when he shot and killed a dog.
"Killer" was a 12-year-old Dachsund known by many in his Berman Drive neighborhood.
Officer Murrill McLean shot the animal Monday while trying to serve a warrant at a nearby home.
McLean worried the dog had rabies and shot the animal in self-defense.
Killer's owner Angela Harper says her pet did not have rabies and has never attacked anyone.
"He was a little dog," says Harper. "So I think he was kind of careless in choosing to shoot."

WHat is doubly maddening is that there is a double standard for them where this is perfectly okay.
You know good and well that he did it for the same reason cops speed and don’t stop for stop signs. Because he could do it and get away with it.
Can you imagine what would happen to you or me if we used that excuse after shooting a yapping 9 pound six inch tall dog. We would be under the jail.
Even if we missed, we’d be in jail for a firearms discharge!
The amazing thing is that they are standing by this guys’s actions.
Sadists love to shoot/kill dogs.
Only thing they love more are those cute little copper ninja outfits.
I miss ‘peace officers’. ‘Law enforcement’ is a blight. A dangerous blight.
My God he looks like he is fixing to charge.
This shooting really is pathetic. And the Police Chief defending the cop is even more pathetic. No self-restraint, no integrity, merciless to the harmless, arrogant to the end. They shame their city.
There will be proof of a God when this scumbag chokes on his donut.
From all of the stories I read like this, I wonder if shooting a small dog isn’t a prerequisite to get on the police force.
I seem to read at least 1 or 2 a week!
Someone who gets so panicked by an old weiner dog as to pull out their gun and start shooting probably doesn’t have the right temperment for police work.
Officer McLean should really consider a different line of work.
ANd not just any dog, but a 12 year old dog. There is no way a dog of that size at that age could be ever considered a threat.
If the officer thought it was, he really does need to find another line of work.
Which scumbag?
The one who did the unjustified shooting or the one who stood behind the unjustified shooting?

Here’s the email address for the Danville Police Dept. The chief’s name is Philip Broadfoot.
Has there been a lot of rabies in the area?
Geez oh Pete, pick up any object and yell. The dog will be frightened and run off.
How many teeth did this dog have at 12?!?
This is insane. Are small dogs becoming the “right wing extremists” of the canine world?
I think the circumstances are at issue here.
The officer was serving a warrant....therefore, this was not an emergency situation where seconds count.
Unless the officer can show the owner was urging the dog to attack him, there is no justification for this shooting and the officer should be relieved of duty immediately.
It is a good thing to have a dog in the house in case a police officer comes to the door. It is coming to be accepted that if they go to a house on a complaint they get to shoot somebody. Dogs are there to be shot so that the officers don’t have to shoot any humans.
He clearly is a danger to the community and to the public relations efforts of the police department. Who or what will he kill next?
This is an opportunity for a lawyer to do some good making this idiot and the city to feel ($$$) the damage he's done.
