Cheney hopes CIA director was misquoted
The Hill ^ | 6-15-09 | Reid Wilson

Vice President Dick Cheney on Monday hit back at CIA Director Leon Panetta, over his suggestion that Cheney wants another terrorist attack on U.S. soil.

"I hope my old friend Leon was misquoted," said Cheney in a statement provided to The Hill. "The important thing is whether or not the Obama administration will continue the policies that have kept us safe for the last eight years."

Panetta, a veteran politician who served as Bill Clinton's chief of staff, had criticized Cheney for "gallows politics" and said the former vice president hoped the country were subject to another terrorist attack.

"I think he smells some blood in the water on the national-security issue," Panetta told The New Yorker's Jane Mayer. "It’s almost, a little bit, gallows politics. When you read behind it, it’s almost as if he’s wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point. I think that’s dangerous politics."

In recent months, Cheney has become a leading Republican voice in warning the Obama administration has pursued policies that make the country less safe.

Panetta's statement has that "whiff" of Obama "truth squad" about it. Probably had to trash Cheney to keep his job, or maybe to keep from getting run over by a truck or something.

When the "truth squad" guys sign on to FR they all sound like that ~ and they are easily outed.

McCain demands Panetta retract comments about Cheney

###

CIA Director Leon Panetta should immediately retract comments he made to the New Yorker magazine suggesting former Vice President Cheney is wishing for another terrorist attack on the U.S., Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) demanded Monday.

“I disagreed with the Cheney policy on interrogation techniques, but never did it cross my mind that Dick Cheney would ever want an attack on the United States of America,” the former Republican presidential candidate said during an appearance on Fox News. “It’s unfair, and I think that Mr. Panetta should retract, and retract immediately.”

Why does John McCain have to take a hit for doing the right thing?

How does sending terrorists to a vacation paradise in Bermuda prevent another attack on America, Leon?

“When you read behind it, it’s almost as if he’s wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point. I think that’s dangerous politics.”

It must be a projection of his own disgusting habits from when he kept reading the NYT every morning hoping for bad news from Iraq...what a slime this guy is...

Personally, I hope Cheney was misquoted. He should've said something like this:

"It's really a sad day for our country when someone who is the head of the CIA actually says something this stupid. Who does Leon think he is, Joe Biden?"

For saying he doesn’t agree with the
interrogation techniques that saved
lives and prevented attacks here, which
is his constant mantra ?

Defies and denies reality.

He has personal issues with waterboarding. If that was the only possible way to deal with terrorists, you might have a point, but it’s not and was rarely done.

“I hope my old friend Leon was misquoted,” said Cheney

Tomorrow this will probably be described as an vicious unwarranted attack by the former vice president.

McCain actually sticking up for a fellow Republican? I'm in shock.

Panetta seems to be questioning Dick Cheney’s patriotism.

Strange, I thought only Republicans did that.

IMO, the point is what’s critical is the outcome
of the Bush/Cheney decision to use whatever steps
it took at the appropriate times, with the particular
savages who had the pertinent info, to protect the
USA.

McCain always sidestraddles and clouds that bottom
line ... to a sickening degree.

They did not use techniques, wrongly described as
“torture” deliberately or merely for the sake of
torture, especially since our Special Ops troops
are “tortured” routinely in training.

Bush/Cheney did whatever it took to produce vital
information to prevent catastrophes here, probably
more than a couple and maybe more than we’ll ever
know, and God bless them.

This is what you get when you appoint a partisan hack like Panetta as CIA director, instead of someone with actual national security/intelligence experience.
