Supervisors suggest putting unemployed parents to work caring for their own children as part of proposed changes to CalWorks and other state government aid programs.
With steep state budget cuts under debate in Sacramento, Los Angeles County supervisors voted Tuesday to push for changes to CalWorks and other government aid programs they said would save nearly $270 million.
Included in their suggestions is a novel proposal: Put unemployed parents to work caring for their own children.
"What we're saying is do not cut Welfare to Work outright: Target the cuts to the people who are the most expensive," said Miguel Santana, a deputy to the county's chief executive.
Parents now receiving assistance must attend job training and search for work. While they fulfill those requirements, they are eligible for subsidized child care, which typically costs the state about $500 a month per child in L.A. County.
The parents of children under age 1 may stay home and still receive benefits. Now, county officials propose expanding that to parents who have one child under age 2 or two children under age 6. Monthly job training and child-care costs for such parents often exceed their welfare check, Santana said.

I'm 'bout tired of this.
Even more novel idea...ship all the illegals back to Mexico or whatever the hell they come from!
Have babies nilly-willy and get paid to take care of them... jeez...
They have all that oil sitting off shore just waiting to be pumped, but the girley men in their senate, congress and their Governor are afraid to go against the tree huggers in the epa. So they sit on their thumbs and wait...wait...wait for something to happen.
So, the state spends the same amount of money, but instead of having someone get out and look for a job, they get to stay home and yell and their kids? Brilliant!
So let’s pay someone $1000 per month for child care, plus $750 in welfare, plus free medical care for all so the mom can go to school and land a $14/hr job and a grocery store upon graduation.
We are insane here in California.

It isn’t just California. I know a couple in Tennessee who have a severely handicapped adult son. They both quit their jobs a few years ago and got certified as home health care workers. Now, the state pays them for a 12 hour shift each....24-7.
It must not be that uncommon.
Without stable, committed, REAL men (as opposed to girly, candy a$$ed gang members who wouldn't know genuine masculanity if it walked up and punched them in the head), the kids will always come out losers in the situation, and the downward slide will continue...
I always believed that I was blessed with average intelligence, but that story, to me, reminded me of an old professional comedian, Professor Corey.
Totally incomprehensible.
Specifically, how does that exercise in sleight of hand contribute to the $270 million "savings?"
I have no idea and, I suspect, neither does anyone else.
Ideas like this should be expected - when fools, knaves and leaches vote.
