A Supreme Leader Loses His Aura as Iranians Flock to the Streets
NY Times ^

TEHRAN — The Iranian police commander, in green uniform, walked up Komak Hospital Alley with arms raised and his small unit at his side. “I swear to God,” he shouted at the protesters facing him, “I have children, I have a wife, I don’t want to beat people. Please go home.”

A man at my side threw a rock at him. The commander, unflinching, continued to plead. There were chants of “Join us! Join us!” The unit retreated toward Revolution Street, where vast crowds eddied back and forth confronted by baton-wielding Basij militia and black-clad riot police officers on motorbikes.

Dark smoke billowed over this vast city in the late afternoon. Motorbikes were set on fire, sending bursts of bright flame skyward. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader, had used his Friday sermon to declare high noon in Tehran, warning of “bloodshed and chaos” if protests over a disputed election persisted.

He got both on Saturday — and saw the hitherto sacrosanct authority of his office challenged as never before since the 1979 revolution birthed the Islamic Republic and conceived for it a leadership post standing at the very flank of the Prophet. A multitude of Iranians took their fight through a holy breach on Saturday from which there appears to be scant turning back.

Story summary: intrepid Times reporter sends dispatch about anecdotes and the overinflates them to mean something.

This looks like Tiananmen Square Redux to me - something premature that will be crushed. The reporter should go into the smaller, more religious cities to see whether there is much discontent.

If that passage had originally been written by somebody who spoke and wrote English as a first language, how would it have been worded? I don't understand what a "small unit" refers to.

You need to read more .....
There were rallies in all the large cities - and people killed in them too.
In the smaller towns, the police & basij have been able to keep most of the people too intimidated to do much, though some have tried to gather anyway.

I don't know, either he had a few ( one or 2 ) other police officers with him... or could be his side arm ( gun ) ....

It looks like he did sympathize with the protesters, while are the same time he had orders and doing his job and he has a family at home and he does not want to get hurt or killed....

There is no way to know how big this will get. in the meantime, we should show whatever support we can for their cause. You can do this by displaying a small piece of green ribbon. you can buy 200 feet of green surveyor’s tape at Home Depot for $1.99. it is non-sticky. just break off a couple of feet and tie it to your antenna, your flagpole underneath your american flag, or the handlebars of your Harley. If thousands of us do this it will send a strong message to the American tyrants as well as the Iranian ones.

Obviously referring to Obama:

The wifey looks mad
Could it be that his johnson
Came from his white side?

...thanks to Lizavetta for authoring the haiku, which I treasure.

Cheers!

The Iranian police commander, in green uniform,

Isn't that Bambi's color of choice for his national street thugs?

Mullahs will bring in “rent a thug Arabs” when the Iranian police start to switch sides. The Iranian people need our prayers.

I support these folks. But it’s quite possible that they are still in the minority of Iranians, that’s all.

For about 7-8 years now, there have been predictions by Iranian refugees and dissidents that things were going to blow in Iran. Eventually they will be correct. But I gave up on those imminent ones about 4 years ago as so much hot air.

Try Orchard Supply, Ace hardware, or order it online. break off a few pieces for your own use and pass the roll on to a neighbor or friend.

This will end badly. The side with the guns will win against the side with no guns. That’s how it works.

Who remembers the Burmese riots of 2007? How did those work out again?

I hope the mob drags all of those filthy old corrupt mullahs and ayatollahs into the street and tears them apart.
