White House Changes the Terms of a Campaign Pledge About Posting Bills Online
NYT ^ | 6/22/09 | KATHARINE Q. SEELYE

During the presidential campaign, Barack Obama promised that once a bill was passed by Congress, the White House would post it online for five days before he signed it.

The latest on President Obama, the new administration and other news from Washington and around the nation. “When there’s a bill that ends up on my desk as president, you the public will have five days to look online and find out what’s in it before I sign it, so that you know what your government’s doing,” Mr. Obama said as a candidate, telling voters he would make government more transparent and accountable.

You can, most of the time. The Library of Congress has a service called “Thomas” (named after Thomas Jefferson) where you can read and track legislation as it makes its way through the legislative process. Of course it is useless for those bills, like “Porkulus” that are written in the dead of night and passed in the morning. But for most bills the text is there, and a summary by the Congressional Research Service. The summaries I have read tend to be down-the-middle and factual. Web address is: http://thomas.loc.gov/

None of us here on FR expected him to do what he promised. Too bad he fooled the majority of mind-numbed idiots who voted for him.

“Every bill going through Congress should have a complete change log on it. Every word, line or paragraph should have the name of the Congressman (no staffers allowed) who authorized it to be added or deleted along with the date and time of the change. Every vote in committee or on the floor should be attached too - no more voice votes or unanamous consents on bills. Also, the electronic copy with the change log should be the official copy so there is no chance that handwritten changes can be made. If you want it voted on it has to be typed into the computer and associated with the Congressman putting it into consideration (again, no hiding behind anonymous “staffers”). “

Wow, that’s the way a bill should be implemented.

It’ll never happen!

[The Obama team has also said that it found unexpected technical hurdles in translating its campaign goals to governing.]

I would think that would be beyond Babel Fish’s capabilities.

I read in the WSJ that the bill that Obama’s justice dept put together to make his administration open and transparent, was filled with holes designed by Holder to do an end around on all those promises.

I can't find this anywhere. if it has not been posted here it is for y'all.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/UnitedWeServeKickOff/

Last week, when President Obama announced United We Serve -- he called on all Americans to volunteer this summer and do our part to rebuild our communities.

When he said "all," he meant it.

Back off Michelle and Obama. We volunteer all the time. You did not just invent it. And you do not control or rule us.

And Michelle how about answering how much you had to do with the IG firing? You came to California for a graduation speech. You met with Sacramento mayor and all of a sudden one of your AIDES goes to work for your boot camps volunteer program and the IG is fired who found Sac mayors corrupt abuse of taxpayer funds? Then your husband tries to destroy the IG by saying he was not acting right? I remember you and Obama passing around McCain was erratic. Got a problem with older citizens? Maybe your health plan will wipe them out?

Hopefully one day, you and obama, old and gray, about 2012 from living a hard radical life, you can retire in Iran. They will take care of you.

Obama never read the bills that he voted on when he was in the Senate, so it never occurred to him that the general public would read them.

I think that article that Betsey McCaughey wrote for the WSJ, on the Kennedy Health Care bill, was particularly devestating because it gave specific sections of the bill to back up the criticisms of the program. Obama cannot claim that the critics are lying when the proof is posted right from the bill, itself.

The wording they use is to trick everyone. It is too late after the bill is on his desk. And obama vetos nothing because its legislation and his party rule.

I think he signs them as an act of foreplay with Pelosi before they screw us.
(figuratively speaking)
By the time they post them, both obama and pelosi have had their cigarettes and are sleeping in one another's arms..
