My former brother-in-law was married to the daughter of a New York State Supreme Court Judge. The guy was an insufferable liberal POS that had been appointed to the court by King Mario the Pious.
He bristled at being addressed in any way other than “Judge”.
Naturally, I always addressed him as “Mr.”
... and the horse he rode in on.
A friend just after receiving his Ph.D. in Economics boarded a plane for an interview on the East Coast. He signed in as Dr. ..... During the flight there was a medical emergency. He was paged and asked to assist. He had to swallow hard and admit his doctorate was not in medicine. Needless to say, he never did that again. Humility, as they say, is a humbling thing.
Hey, it coulda been worse.
He coulda thought he was always in court, holding court,
and bristled at being called anything other than “Your Honor”.
Yet I’ve been in court and heard Judges being addressed both ways by lawyers, and seeming to be OK with it.
But yeah, there’s something basically wrong with someone
whose identity is so emotionally tied up with his title to
the exclusion of his basic human identity.
