After a month of back-and-forth negotiations, the controversy between Liberty University and the college Democrat club reached a resolution Monday.
A proposed change in university policy, announced by Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. over the weekend, in effect puts the student club on equal footing with the schools College Republicans.
Both groups, along with any other political clubs on campus, now are recognized under the new policy as unofficial clubs.
The move was embraced by a student leader of the Democratic club on Monday.
We decided to go ahead and implement (the policy) as of today, Falwell said Monday. The (College) Republicans have been removed from official status and been moved to the new unofficial status that we just created.
College Democrats Secretary Jan Dervish said Monday that he was pleased with the change.
Throughout all this, (our goal) was to be on equal footing with our counterparts, he said. I think that this was a successful compromise.
Last month, LU withdrew its recognition of the club because it supported the Democratic Partys pro-choice and pro-gay marriage rights platform and candidates.
Falwell said the previously suspended College Democrats wouldnt have to do anything to be recognized under the new policy. Along with other stipulations, the policy allows unofficial clubs to use the universitys name, but they will not receive any college funding.
Also, unofficial clubs that support candidates whose views are contrary to the universitys Christian mission will not lose their status, but will not be able to use the colleges facilities to endorse such candidates, Falwell said.

“Falwell caves”
Falwell’s dead!
His son now runs LU.
I guess it’s caving to a point, more than likely they realized the potential endless lawsuits the Democratic Party would put them through and decided to cut their losses. The club still can’t use university facilities to endorse candidates that don’t fit the school’s Christian mission and policies, so that’s something at least.

Democrats demand complete monopoly of EVERYTHING.
NOTHING can be exempted from their contamination.
It isn't enough that they control the vast majority of universities. Rather than go to one of those schools, some would rather cause problems for the few that have been set up for other worldviews in the name of "fairness".
It's the same approach the ACLU and CAIR use.
Wow! What a cave-in! Jerry Falwell must be turning in his grave. Now the university is allowing a pro-abortion, pro-gay group to meet on its campus. How does this square with Christian morals and ethics?
They didnt cave....They made it a point that they didnt want LU money going to groups/candidates that are pro abortion/gay marriage. Their money didnt go there, and its not now. Quite frankly, I’m not sure LU club money should be going to ANY candidate - leave that up the board, individuals, etc, not a bunch of kids who have never worked for a living.
.
I dont see this as a cave, I see this as a clarification.
Read again.
I think that it is a great policy. I only think that they should have had one more stipulation for any political club on campus (Republican, Demonrat or Green, for that matter): they should be required to participate in bi-annual debates on key issues of the time.
“Junior” is not... :-)

Nothing “objectionable” actually. But the article says those groups you mentioned may NOT use the university’s facilities. Maybe I misread.
Under the new policy, the unofficial organizations wont receive school funding but may use the Liberty name and meet in school facilities if they make it clear the university doesnt officially endorse them.
