Yes, it's that Frank Schaeffer. Apparently he went somewhat off his rocker after failing to become a successful film director. He directed four films in the late 80s/early 90s, all of which were flops and earned ratings below 5.0 on IMDB (their rating system is very generous, so a film has to be abysmal to fall that low, and all four of his films did).

In our decadent society, the easiest way for a conservative sub-mediocrity to earn praise and adulation from the “beautiful people” is to turn liberal, especially on social issues. So never let it be said that Franky doesn't follow the path of least resistance.

And by turning liberal, did that in any way help his film career ? How many famous five star film has he made lately ?
