HR 2749 - The Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009
Farmer-t-Comsuemr Legal Defense Fund ^ | june 15 2009 | Editor

* HR 2749 would empower FDA to regulate how crops are raised and harvested. It puts the federal government right on the farm, dictating to our farmers.

* HR 2749 would give FDA the power to order a quarantine of a geographic area, including "prohibiting or restricting the movement of food or of any vehicle being used or that has been used to transport or hold such food within the geographic area." Under this provision, farmers markets and local food sources could be shut down, even if they are not the source of the contamination. The agency can halt all movement of all food in a geographic area.

This is 10 days old but almost as ominous as socialization of medicine. It gives the government power to, among other things, stop all movement of food in a given geographic area. It is total control of the food supply. This can and surely will be used for political power purposes. The ayatollah doesn't have that much power.

Wouldn't it be nice for the rats to make laws to actually help?

Every law they pass takes more of our Liberties away.

Part if this bill also includes a new annual fee of $500 for all food producers. We own a small gourmet food company and working with the FDA has always free.

You basically told them you were in business, filed a report and based on your reach, production means, sales, etc theyd inspect you periodically. Now every year $500, whether your Heniz Ketchup or Joes Salsa. We’re just a small local company selling at co-ops, farm stands, farmers markets etc, $500 is a lot to us.

Hmmm. Wondering if this is to put the kabosh on tobacco growers?

When the O got elected, I though that Obamunism would be about 60% Socialism, 20% Capitalism, 10% Communism, and 10% Fascism.

But, now it looks like its 70% Fascism, 20% Socialism, and 10% Communism, with only trace amounts of Capitalism.

I hope the 52% are proud of themselves. They did what the Soviet Union couldn’t accomplish in 40 years.

In this bill, is the U.S. “Food and Drug Administration” going to require proper labeling of food source countries such as China and Mexico?

And does it include “food supplements” such as vitamins, which I’m beginning to suspect are sourced from China in staggeringly high percentages, like 50 percent or maybe even 80 or 90 percent.

Are Mexican jalapeno pappers and pork products going to legally be required to be labeled “Product of Mexico”?

Are vitamins which are either sourced or manufactured in China going to be labeled “Product of China”?

See my #6 above.

This ongoing failure to properly label food sources is identical to the ongoing failure to deal with illegals.

The ayatollah doesn't have that much power.

Lenin did.

If you think I am talking about politically motivated famine, you got it right in one. Growing your own food won't be enough. You must also be able to effectively hide it from the government.

I think that you are right. This is less about “labeling” or “safety” and more about making sure that the government is the sole dictator or who can produce “food”. Expect anti-hoarding laws after that. Travis McGee, call your office...

“Every law they pass takes more of our Liberties away.”

The rats in NJ have been doing this for the past eight years. The whole Northeast for that matter, is under rat control and up to their eyeballs in red ink.

I always breathe a sigh of relief the Trenton politicians are in recess. No more stupid nanny state laws.

Now we have the same type of a$$sshats in DC doing the same thing on a national level.

We have every reason to be afraid, very afraid.

So we have molone labe for our guns whats the latin for cucumbers and tomatoes?

Larry and Bob?

What concerns me is that some of my food connections don't make $500.00 per year on it. Rather than light gray market the way we do it now, we will have to go black.

This bill doesn't even pretend to go after the real cause of food safety concerns: Huge food factories that don't prevent their illegal alien workers from relieving themselves in the fields.

By light gray I meant that it was not recognized by government in any form. Not against any laws, but not regulated in any way. Totally legal in the country I was born, but soon will not be.

My great grandmother was four foot two. Her family were short but not normally that short. The cause was politically motivated famine of the sort I mentioned earlier.

Growing your own food won't be enough. You must also be able to effectively hide it from the government.

I understand the definitions are so loosely written that even your home garden plot is under their control. The govt claims they wouldn't do that but they won't tighten the wording.
