NEW YORK A runway at New York City's Kennedy Airport was shut down Wednesday morning after 78 turtles emerged from the bay and crawled onto the tarmac.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says grounds crews rounded up the wayward reptiles in about 35 minutes and deposited them back in the water, further from airport property.
The shutdown disrupted flight schedules, though, with delays climbing to nearly 1 1/2 hours.

Aww, jeeez. Not another ‘why did the turtle cross the runway?” joke...
And ill-tempered sea bass.
thank god the Stimulus bill provided few billions for the turtle overpass funding. that’s absolutely essential for the future of this planet.
also, as others here have smartly concluded, this is absolute 100% proof of Global Warming. That’s why we need to raise taxes and destroy the economy.
Thanks for sharing that landing story.
I would think a larger aircraft might get a ding or two but small aircraft can take a wallop depending on the size of the turtle, or worse yet, a pack of them.
Back in the 1970’s a moose on runway 26 shut the Helena Regional airport dow. We now have fence around but antelope can still bound over it.
Maybe the turtles were protesting.
A couple of weeks ago wifey and I returned home to California from toodling around the entire lower third of the U.S. - a month on the road......countless times in the south we saw turtles inching across highways and even the Interstates. They'd be pretty visible as you came upon 'em, and we saw only one squashed version.
Armadillos, though - that's another matter.....we must have spotted a hundred of 'em, and not a single survivor.
The Supreme Court rules that because turtles are velocity challenged it is a hate crime to say they "crawl". Further it is a violation of their civil rights under the equal protection clause to move them off the runway . Construction has begun on a $40 billion project to raise the runway to allow the turtles free range
Turtles playing frogger?
Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?
A: To prove to the armadillos that it could be done.
“Armadillos, though - that’s another matter.....we must have spotted a hundred of ‘em, and not a single survivor. “
My parents and I drove a new section of interstate that had just recently opened up in central Louisiana in the late 60’s. The number of dead armadillos along the road was along the lines of “you had to see it to believe it”. It looked like a slaughter house.
Saw one like that a number of years ago on I-55 south of Cape Girardeau. Talked to a nature guy & he said most of them make it across although a semi could do a job on him.
Although a turtle would certainly break up if run over, The Turtles joined Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention for a few albums in the 1970’s.
These are good legal reasons for treating turtles with the same degree of equality due to ANY species, but wouldn’t it be better for Mother Gaia if we just simply abandoned the use of aircraft? Unless absolutely necessary for flying Bono and Al to a conference, of course...
I went to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida last year. I went every bit as much to look at the wildlife as to look at the space stuff, and that’s saying a lot. I have a big thing for both. I wasn’t disappointed, and wasn’t expecting to see the Armadillos that I did.
Very cool trip, and I’ll be doing it again as soon as I can.
So Happy Together
“Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t turtles amphibians, and tortoises reptiles?”
All turtles and tortoises are reptiles.
