Breakthrough near in Honduras crisis: UN

NEW YORK — The head of the United Nations General Assembly signalled Friday a breakthrough is imminent in talks to resolve the political crisis in Honduras.

Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann spoke in New York as thousands of supporters of Honduras’s ousted president, Manuel Zelaya, held rallies in the Central American country.

“I have a feeling that we are moving in that direction rather quickly,” the former Nicaraguan revolutionary, who is also a Catholic priest, told a news conference at the UN.

Insiders suggested that a timetable had been laid out in which Zelaya, a rich landowner whose leftist policies led him to become a close ally of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, would return to his country as early as next week. He would be allowed to complete his term as president through to January in return for making clear he has no intention of seeking to extend his rule, they said.

You can bet that if the UN is involved, the people of Honduras are about to get screwed over.

Not going to happen. He won't finish his term. The Hondurans know exactly how far they can trust him, which is as far as they can shoot him.

Breakthrough...right.

Probably more like Luca Brazzi is holding a gun to Honduras’ head while Don 0bama assures them either their signature or their brains will be on the agreement.

Please, please, show me a dictator that never intends to extend his rule...

Loyal Hondurans: Run him out, do what’s necessary to save your Constitutional form of government, the UN doesn’t do squat for freedom, you are being usurped! The UN just overruled your Supreme Court and the will of the people. All those Hondurans supposedly supportive of Zelaya in NY haven’t had to live under this dictator have they!! Remember Romania.

But look at us here!!

I’m thinking this could turn out like Aristde, former leader of Haiti.

Whoever rescues him will have to accept the fact that they’ll be called kidnappers.

D’Escoto was ordained a Roman Catholic priest for the Maryknoll congregation, before engaging in politics. He was a key figure in the founding of the Maryknoll imprint, Orbis Books, in 1970, and was an official with the World Council of Churches. As an adherent of liberation theology, he secretly joined the Sandinistas.

He first publicly expressed support for the FSLN as one of Los Doce, in October 1977, and was appointed foreign minister after the Sandinista triumph in 1979. He served as foreign minister in Daniel Ortega’s FSLN government from 1979 to 1990.[5] Pope John Paul II admonished him and other priests in the government for getting involved in politics. Early in the Contra war, the Reagan administration perceived him as a relative moderate who might break with the regime. While foreign minister, he received the Lenin Peace Prize for 1985-6, and the Thomas Merton Award for 1987.[6]

He was suspended by the Vatican in the 1980s together with two other priests involved in the Sandinista revolution, Ernesto and Fernando Cardenal. During a visit to Central America, Pope John Paul II publicly reprimanded him for his political activities. [http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/new.php?n=12862}

After the Sandinistas lost the 1990 elections, he led the Communal Movement, but resigned that post in December 1991 after his support within the organization waned.[7] He has staunchly supported Ortega against the Sandinista Renovation Movement dissidents.[8]

In 1999, then Archbishop of Managua, Cardinal Miguel Obando Bravo, criticized those priests who became involved with the Sandinistas and abandoned their priestly ministry for politics. He said the priests never denounced the injustices that took place at that time. [http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/new.php?n=12862}

Latin American and Caribbean nations selected Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann as their candidate to become the next president of the U.N. General Assembly. On June 4, 2008, he was elected by acclamation to preside over 63rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, from September 2008 to September 2009.[9]

Hondurans...just say NO. And not only no, but HELL NO!

Never allow an ousted Marxist tyrant wanna-be back into your country. Never give him any power whatsoever.

The majority of the people of Honduras know that the blow against liberty and republican principle was being planned and carried out by Zelaya himself as he tried to institute a referendum calling for changing the Honduras constitution. That referendum was illegal and not a due process under the Honduras constitution for changing the constitution.

The Supreme Court of that nation ruled against it (properly so) and the President was planning to use the Executive Branch to implement it anyway. That's when the Supreme Court and a majority of the legislature called for the military's assistance...and they gave it, in support of the Hionduras constitution which Zelaya was attempting to subvert.

And so the telling thing about what happened in Honduras is this: EVERY Marxist in the Western Hemisphere is against it, including the Marxist Obama who is arm-and-arm with his marxist friends, Chavez and Castro on this.

That tells you that what the Honduras military did at the request of its Supreme Court and w/support from its legislature was correct, and avoided a move by Marxists to circumvent the Honduran constitution and entrench marxism in Honduras.

Bravo for the Honduras Supreme Court and military...and down with Obama's marxist dogma, policies, and ideology!

I don't see the ravings of the depraved communist son of a bitch president of the UN as breaking news.

The legitimate government of Honduras is not going to reinstate a communist Chavez puppet as President, period.
