Obama, in op-ed, says economy should be rebuilt 'better than before'

WASHINGTON - With the economy still firmly in the grip of a tenacious recession, President Barack Obama is urging Americans to have patience and give his economic recovery plan time to work.
Restating themes he laid out in his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama said in an op-ed posted early Sunday on The Washington Post's Web site that his $787 billion stimulus program was not expected to return the economy to full health, but to provide a boost that would stop the free fall.
"So far, it has done that," the president wrote. "It was, from the start, a two-year program, and it will steadily save and create jobs as it ramps up over this summer and fall."
He said his stimulus plan must be given time to work and appealed to Americans, who are increasingly uneasy with rising unemployment and ballooning budget deficits, to let his plan "work the way it's supposed to, with the understanding that in any recession, unemployment tends to recover more slowly than other measures of economic activity."

"Simply put, this is now President Obama's economy and the American people are beginning to question whether his policies are working," Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, the House Republican whip, said in the GOP's weekly address.
Obama, in the op-ed, said "Even as we rescue this economy from a full-blown crisis, I have insisted that we must rebuild it better than before."
Health care costs must be controlled, jobs created within the U.S., worker training programs established and budget deficits reduced, he said.

More like "Five Year Plan", and surely to be just as successful.
At least he keeps talking about it, trying to reassure people. If bush had just opened his mouth a few more times about Iraq and other matters, it would have countered the drip-drip-drip against him, and we might have kept the Congress in 2006.
Socialism is not "better", Mr. Obama. Check your history books.
Since Obama took office 3.4 million jobs have been lost. Despite this dismal failure, he has stated that he intends to let the Bush tax cuts expire. That alone will result in a few more million lost jobs. Plus, Obama is hell-bent on cap & trade, which will make electricity costs skyrocket, resulting in the loss of a few more million jobs. And Congress is increasing the minimum wage from $6.55 to $7.25 per hour effective July 24th, which will result in the elimination of more jobs. Plus, the Demo-Socialists want a surtax on the so-called rich to pay for socialized medicine, and a fine on individuals and/or companies who fail to obtain medical insurance, which will result in more lost jobs and more people forced into government medicine.
In summary, Obama and his Socialist Congress have a plan to destroy the economy and our freedom. This is not accidental or due to inexperience. It is premeditated, deliberate, and evil. Obama actually wants more people to be dependent on the government, to build a captive, helpless constituency. He is aiming for totalitarian control and the destruction of our Constitution and way of life.
We have made plans to ensure unemployment does not exceed 8%. That was then, this is now: we are stopping the free fall. Then it was a fixed target...now it is a moving target spaced over years.
Mr. President, if you’re going to hit a moving target
you have to lead it, but that is something you wouldn’t
know about.
When Clinton entered office, the economy had already begun to improve (under Bush I) - but Clinton got immediate credit for it.
No one said, “It’s Bush’s recovery - we inherited a great start.”
No, it was all CLINTON’S policy, or - simply the fact that he WAS the President - that was causing the turnaround.
How come Obama isn’t similarly “credited” with this (bad) situation? After all — he’s President now.
- from Dept. of Double Standards, Office of WIT (Whatever It Takes)
If the Space Shuttle had a Booster like Obama’s stimulus, it wouldnt get off the ground.
We're at 9.5% unemployment now - how much "better" does he want it to get?
I cannot wait for him to be adding to the unemployment numbers.
