Climate Change Hearing Turns Stormy

Siobhan Hughes reports on energy policy.

A Senate hearing over climate-change legislation took an emotional turn today, when the head of a top black business group accused the chairwoman of being “condescending” and “racial.”

Tensions had been building between the head of the National Black Chamber of Commerce, Harry Alford, and Senate Environment and Public Works Chairman Barbara Boxer, who is seeking to pass legislation to impose mandatory greenhouse-gas reductions.

The California Democrat said energy investments are creating jobs in her state, but Alford testified that he saw no evidence that energy investments are creating jobs. “I’ve been looking - I haven’t seen them yet,” he said. “The last time I checked, California is an economic basket case and these green jobs aren’t going to solve it.”

Boxer responded: “I want you to come with me. Let’s go see these jobs you say don’t exist.”

She then put into the record a statement from a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People related to the merits of energy investment. Alford objected. “That’s condescending and I don’t like it,” Alford said. “It’s racial. I take offense to that.”

He said that “quoting some other black man” is “racial,” appearing to suggest that his arguments about the economic effects of climate change legislation should be taken on their own terms rather than in the context of race. “We’re talking energy,” he said. The “road the chair went down I think is God awful.”

Alford did a great job. Just watched the vid. Boxer was ‘too busy broadcasting to receive’......as usual.

In fairness to Boxer, she is condescending to everyone.

Maybe I’m missing something but I fail to see how Climate Change is a racial matter — unless one is doing the old joke about “Women and minorities hit hardest”.

Bravo National Black Chamber of Commerce head, Harry Alford!

He is standing up to that Mega-Liar, condescending, arrogant tyrant, Marie Antoinette Boxer.

Interesting! Box-0-rocks finally met a black who doesn’t appreciate the arrogant condescension served by liberals. This ingrate better get back in line and step lively! And, what’s he doing defending business and prosperity, doesn’t he know his PLACE?

How could a piece of humanity like her ever get elected to office? If ever someone needed the hell slapped out of them, it is her.

Thanks. I guess I can see that. It’s tremendously stupid of her, but I guess I can’t claim to be surprised.

He said that “quoting some other black man” is “racial,” appearing to suggest that his arguments about the economic effects of climate change legislation should be taken on their own terms rather than in the context of race. “We’re talking energy,” he said.

While he's got a fair point, there's a bit of hypocrisy too in that he is representing the Black Chamber of Commerce in a discussion of energy. How does his testimony differ from whomever was speaking from the Chamber of Commerce?

...he was interpreting her as saying "See? Other black people support it, so what are you griping about."

LOL! Mostly because that's exactly what she was saying! Totalling avoiding the point that the Black Chamber of Commerce is interested in a productive private-sector economy, and the NAACP is interested in -- what? -- toadying to the Dems, no matter how crack-brained their schemes! The NAACP has no expertise in economic matters that I've ever seen, and to cite them on such a question is like citing the NFL on the state of the American novel!
