Mystery solved: Alaska's big blob is identified as algae
McClatchy ^ | 7/17/09 | Kyle Hopkins

A sample of the giant black mystery blob that Wainwright hunters discovered this month floating in the Chukchi Sea has been identified.

Not bunker oil seeping from an aging, sunken ship. Not a sea monster.

It looks to be a stringy batch of algae.

"We got the results back from the lab today," said Ed Meggert, of the Department of Environmental Conservation in Fairbanks. "It was marine algae."

It was much more fun to think it was the Blob, dropped onto artic ice at the end of the 1958 movie of the same name, and released now due to global warming melting the ice.

Just think how many liberals we could have panicked spreading that juicy claim around. ;-)

Some “expert” on Coast to Coast with George Noory last night claimed the mass wasn’t of any known organic material, and that it was probably something released from the Alaskan permafrost due to global warming.

"can we burn it?"

Greenpeace has already dried it, rolled it, and are burning it a half-ounce at a time. :)

So, does this get blamed on Global Warming now or can we still attribute this to 8 years of the Bush Administrations failed policies?

Just think how many liberals we could have panicked spreading that juicy claim around.

Don't worry-they're stupid enough to believe it anyhow. Almost every whacked-out conspiracy theory of the last 8 years was concocted by liberals with too much time on their hands, too much hatred in their heart and too much money to spare.

Why actually, yes, You have to dry it first, and it will smell pretty bad. But yea... you could burn it.

Sure it is. Everybody gathers around it, saying it's weird, it's not of this earth, and then six hours later they're all walking around, slack-jawed, empty-eyed, smiling at the camera and saying "Nothing to worry about. It's just algae. Everybody be happy. We all float down here..."

We're going to have to nuke the place from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Exxon just announced a $600 million oil from algae project, coincidence, I think not.

LOL! The moonbats WERE BLAMING THIS ON EVIL OIL COMPANIES.

I read a hilarious post on the news site that carried the story yesterday where some greenie moron claimed that the oil companies were injecting CO2 (which they don’t need in Alaska and just where would the companies get said CO2 supply?) and that the CO2 somehow morphed into methane hydrate (duhhh, where did the extra hydrogen show up and where did the oxygen go?) and somehow the methane hydrate turned into biogoo.

Bad weed...yeah, that’s gotta be it...the greenies got some bad weed. No sober person could possibly be that stupid.
