A little tip for anyone who gets stopped by a police officer for a possible traffic violation. Be polite. Very polite. Even if you think you were wrongly stopped, do not under any circumstances start yelling at the police officer. Follow this advice and your chances of being given a traffic ticket, instead of just a warning, go way down. The same applies for any encounter with a police officer because the surest way to get yourself arrested is to act act arrogantly and aggressively when questioned. Whatever you do, do not act like the arrestee in the Henry Louis Gates police report.
That Cambridge, MA police report presents such a damning picture of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates when he was arrested that an embarrassed Boston Globe felt it had to scrub it from its website after initially posting the report. The Globe published an article about the Gates arrest written by Tracy Jan which does refer to the police report but, unfortunately, you can no longer read the full report on the Boston Globe site since it has been removed by that newspaper. Here are a couple of Boston Globe excerpts that does refer to the deleted police report:

That may well be true in some states but it's absolutely not true here.Cops in Massachusetts are just armed tax collectors. There are reams of evidence proving this...including internal memos from various police chiefs telling street cops of ticket quotas. There's also a famous internal memo within the Massachusetts State Police that tell of quotas.
Gates is one of the least likable people I have ever seen. Abrasiveness is his MO.
I think he’s just a belligerent dumb@$$.
I wonder if he intends to thank the neighbor for caring enough to look out for the residents in the area.
He is a spoiled black that thinks he is entitled to harrass ANYONE he wants to as a payback for his skin color. He needs to be spanked and put out on the highway to pick up trash for a couple of weeks.
He is seriously missing humility and a THANKFUL ATTITUDE to the police for responding to a call at his home.
What a pig this so called prof really is.
I don’t need to read the police report.
Gates’ statements to the press clearly showed that he did everything he could short of physical assault to get arrested.
Hold up. Hold up. The arresting officer has a Hispanic name. Does a Hispanic man outrank a black man in diversity?
Ya know Henry Louis Gates could have used this very helpful and instructional video from Chris Rock:

Well, I think you’ve about covered it. ‘Bout time these people are called out for who they are. The racist bigot saw an opportunity and took it.
We’ve seen this played out many many times. Remember Tawana Brawley? And Al Sharpton never has paid up for his role in the sham. Remember the Duke LaCross players? Remember OJ Simpson? The list goes on and on.
I can definitely tell you from personal experience that even in this benighted people’s republic it pays to be polite to the cops. I’ve been stopped three times for speeding and got exactly one ticket. I think I deserved at least two.
In Boston, and other big cities it might be different. But you are definitely better off being polite.
I once went to a traffic school conducted by a cop. He told us that if we were ever stopped, to place BOTH our hands outside the window. You might feel strange doing it but it lets the cop know you are holding no weapons and they do appreciate the assurance. Since doing this, I have received NO traffic tickets. Only warnings.

I place my hands on the steering wheel at the 12:00 position. After I got out of the Army, I lived in a sketchy neighborhood and drove an old clunker. I got stopped by the NYPD one night and the cops yelled through their bullhorn “place your hands on the top of steering wheel”.
I got the point.
I’m nice to police for several reasons: they have a gun, mace, tasers, billy club, and a radio to call other police officers with guns, mace, tasers, and billy clubs. I’ll fight that battle in court.
Oh,I'm not saying that one *shouldn't* be polite. What I'm saying is that here it will do you no good.I,personally, have been issued exactly *one* moving violation in my life. That ticket was in Newton.I knew that the ticket was BS...given what actually happened...so I fought it in court.Between the time I requested a court hearing and the day of that hearing there was a piece in the local paper proving that Newton had (secret,of course) quotas.I think the paper had gotten a hold of an internal memo.I showed up in court...took the oath....told the judge what happened....presented the article (which the judge indicated that he had seen)...case dismissed.
There have been other memos as well....including one from the commander of the State Police.Howie Carr has,in the past, made reference to this subject.
True, but you are still better off being polite. It also helps if you keep a cute three year old girl in the car with you.
The cop has a choice, he can issue a jive citation to you or the next Jamoke. Always give the cop a chance to cut you a break.
