McCain campaign vetted Birther rumors [dismissed them, concluding Obama natural-born U.S. citizen]

There are, of course, a whole lot of truly baffling things about the Birther movement and its theories. But perhaps one of the most puzzling is this unanswered question: If President Obama really were born in Kenya, why didn't the McCain or Clinton campaigns dig up the evidence and publicize it? Why has that task fallen to the ragtag crew that is the Birthers, led now by Orly Taitz, a dentist/lawyer/real estate agent who got her law degree online and is regularly admonished for having little, if any, idea how to properly file her court papers?

Turns out there's an answer.

The Washington Independent's David Weigel, one of the best sources of reportage on the movement, had a scoop on Friday: The McCain campaign did hear of the rumors of Obama's birth, and -- though they were skeptical from the start -- checked them out.

"We never saw any evidence that then-Senator Obama had been born outside of the United States," Trevor Potter, who served as the general counsel for the McCain campaign, told Weigel. "We saw rumors, but nothing that could be sourced to evidence. There were no statements and no documents that suggested he was born somewhere else. On the other side, there was proof that he was born in Hawaii."

Weigel also quotes an unnamed lawyer who was working for the McCain campaign and was asked to look into the legal merits of one of the early Birther lawsuits. "The conversation was along the lines of ‘this is idiotic, but explain to me why,’” that lawyer said. “I looked at whether the lawsuit was going to be dismissed. I said yes.”

Turns out there's an answer.

Yeah, and it's, "McCain's an idiot who wouldn't even let his opponent's middle name be uttered."

What a load of bogus crap. If 0 gets a bunch of media outlets to call it off, don’t you think McLame would do the same to “help his good friend”?

Why did McLame show his birth cert but accept that 0bama didn’t have to show his?

Thanks Trevor, you did a swell job on the campaign. Thanks again.

No matter what the uncertainties are in the concerns over the validity of Obama’s natural citizenship, it is undeniable that the quickest way to resolve the questions would be to waive the restrictions on access to the original document in the possession of the State of Hawaii and let a panel of forensic document examiners and journalists from a wide array of media entities have a look and put an end to all the speculation.

I don’t see why it serves Obama to ignore this. He has a lot on his plate, seems rather challenged at this moment - why not put this behind him?

This line of logic from the same people who mockingly questioned McCain’s vetting process of Governor Palin?

McCain was in it for the face time in front of the cameras. Nothing more.

He didn’t have the will to win. Nor the skills.

Funny.

I hadn’t realized McCain actually ran a campaign. The stuff you learn every day.

>> Obama ... has a lot on his plate, seems rather challenged at this moment - why not put this behind him

Maybe because there’s no documentation that would stand up to careful scrutiny?

Maybe he thought that his buddies in the sycophantic media would saddle up on the issue, like they did with McCain, and compel Obama to produce his birth certificate too. Surprise John!

It seems that McCain has never been any help to this country since he has been in politics.

Spineless McCain! LOL! I never witnessed anyone campaigning for something that had as little fire in the belly as McShame! His true popularity would have been shown if it were not for Gov. Palin. And I believe it all was a setup - he knew his a#$ was grass. Arizonans, please retire this mcLAME horse.

Why would the McCain campaign waste money on this? There’s no legal standard of proof for the “natural born citizen” test. And if there was any evidence to be found that would have cast serious, legally actionable doubt on Obama’s eligibility, Hillary would have dug it up even if she’d had to have people killed to get at the info.
