Has anyone published details of this previous break-in, from what, two weeks earlier? I’m beginning to think Gates threw a fit for a diversion. What did he say was stolen, previously? Insurance claim?

not that I am aware of.
However, it is weird that two learned men regarding race run into to each other and this dust up occurs.
I am researching to see if they have ever met before and hope other Freepers will help.
