Skip Gates Speaks
The Root ^ | 7/21/2009 | Prof. Gates

Posted on 07/27/2009 12:39:14 PM PDT by RonF

Excerpted quotes:

... we fiddled with the door and it was jammed. I thought, well, maybe the door’s latched. So I walked back to the kitchen porch, unlocked the door and came into the house. And I unlatched the door, but it was still jammed.

...

It looked like someone’s footprint was there. So it’s possible that the door had been jimmied, that someone had tried to get in while I was in China. But for whatever reason, the lock was damaged. My driver hit the door with his shoulder and the door popped open. But the lock was permanently disfigured.

...

All of a sudden, there was a policeman on my porch. And I thought, ‘This is strange.’ So I went over to the front porch still holding the phone, and I said ‘Officer, can I help you?’ And he said, ‘Would you step outside onto the porch.’ And the way he said it, I knew he wasn’t canvassing for the police benevolent association. All the hairs stood up on the back of my neck, and I realized that I was in danger. And I said to him no, out of instinct. I said, ‘No, I will not.’

...

He said ‘I’m here to investigate a 911 call for breaking and entering into this house.’ And I said ‘That’s ridiculous because this happens to be my house. And I’m a Harvard professor.’

...

I turned and closed the front door to the kitchen where I’d left my wallet, and I got out my Harvard ID and my Massachusetts driver’s license which includes my address and I handed them to him. And he’s sitting there looking at them.

Now it’s clear that he had a narrative in his head: A black man was inside someone’s house, probably a white person’s house, and this black man had broken and entered, and this black man was me.

So he’s looking at my ID, he asked me another question, which I refused to answer. He didn’t say, ‘Excuse me, sir, is there a disturbance here, is this your house?’—he demanded that I step out on the porch, and I don’t think he would have done that if I was a white person.

But at that point, I realized that I was in danger. And so I said to him that I want your name, and I want your badge number and I said it repeatedly.

...

It escalated as follows: I kept saying to him, ‘What is your name, and what is your badge number?’ and he refused to respond. I asked him three times, and he refused to respond. And then I said, ‘You’re not responding because I’m a black man, and you’re a white officer.’ That’s what I said. He didn’t say anything. He turned his back to me and turned back to the porch. And I followed him. I kept saying, “I want your name, and I want your badge number.”

It looked like an ocean of police had gathered on my front porch. There were probably half a dozen police officers at this point. The mistake I made was I stepped onto the front porch and asked one of his colleagues for his name and badge number. And when I did, the same officer said, ‘Thank you for accommodating our request. You are under arrest.’ And he handcuffed me right there. It was outrageous. My hands were behind my back I said, ‘I’m handicapped. I walk with a cane. I can’t walk to the squad car like this.’ There was a huddle among the officers; there was a black man among them. They removed the cuffs from the back and put them around the front.

A crowd had gathered, and as they were handcuffing me and walking me out to the car, I said, ‘Is this how you treat a black man in America?’

I can't answer that last question based on this article, but what the article seems to make clear is that this is how they treat a$$holes in Cambridge, Mass.

This is Prof. Gates' own version of what happened. As far as I'm concerned he's condemned out of his own mouth. I figure the issue of whether or not Gates' arrest was in accordance to the laws of Cambridge and Massachusetts secondary to the issue of whether or not it was racially inspired. So - regardless of the color of your skin, read the article, stick your name in there every time Gates says "I said ...." or "I did ...." and see if you figure you would have ended up in the back seat of the squad car.

It went out of control when Gates imagined a “arrative” that must be going through the Sgt’s mind.

Dig that hole Gates, dig it a little deeper. Along with your friend, Obama.

"I may be a little biased here, and I don't know all the facts, but the Cambridge Police clearly acted stupidly."

Obama let his bias and underlying feelings be exposed with that statement.

In truth, underneath the sheen, and the thin venier...behind the TOTUS, Obama is just like Gates, Wright, Ayers, etc.

And, IMHO, that is the most revealing thing about the issue with Gates. He is so clearly another person and instance of a pattern that fits Obama's other "close friends".

Racist, hate filled, angry, people who detest traditional America and the free market and whose seething hatred is only just below the surface...and in some cases always out in the open. Frank Davis, Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn, Jeremiah Wright, Henry Louis Gates, even his own wife, Michelle (by her own admission)...and the list goes on and on.

There is a clear pattern here that the MSM not only knows, but refuses to report. And that is because most of them share this hatred.

Obama and all those pushing his radical agenda are abject marxist ideologues. Their "fundamental; change" is nothing more than a destruction of the American free market and fundamental republican principle.

I am less than happy with Judge Napolitano's 'take' on Fox just now (with Shepard)

He could have been more helpful, but chose not to

There are two sides to every story.

Except some have three...

I want to read the transcript of the open mic radio communication from the Cambridge PD recording system that was made when Sgt. Crowley keyed his mic during Gates’ racist rant.

I saw a policeman on my porch and from his tone of voice “I realized I was in danger”? That’s as far as I had to read. Is this guy just a cop hater? Sounds like it.

He flat out said the arrest was wrong...even illegal!

He only briefly alluded to Gates extenuating circumstances that forced the Officer's hand!!!!

I am steamed!

What an arrogant elitist racist bigot!

The neighbor, the 911 caller and the Cambridge PS were all looking out for Prof. Gates property and this asshole whats to puff his chest out and claim the white cop that made the calls did so only because a black man was reported breaking into a white person's home.

The 911 tape is out and Prof Gates is proved to be nothing more than another Rev. Jeremiah Wright!

Personally, I think any black man who teaches at Harvard and goes by the nickname “Skip” ought to be summarily disqualified from playing the race card, just on general principle.

I doubt the officer was sitting.

Since he acknowledges that it appears someone tried to break in he ought to have been happy to see the police.

I guess in future if he needs to call 911 he can insist that only black firemen, police, or paramedics respond.

Lucky for him he can’t read my mind.
