FDA wrong about e-cigarettes, says FDA study
The Examiner ^ | July 26, 2009 | Cameron English

Not satisfied with its efforts to ban tobacco and demonize its users, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is now taking aim at a potentially healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes.

Electronic cigarettes (or e-cigarettes) are battery powered devices that emulate the look and feel of traditional cigarettes and deliver a vaporized nicotine solution directly to the lungs when smoked. The devices contain no tobacco and there is no combustion involved in their operation. They also contain far fewer carcinogens than other tobacco products, which may make them an excellent alternative to products like cigarettes, cigars and pipes.

Despite their potential, the federal government is not thrilled with the devices. The FDA has already halted 50 shipments of e-cigarettes at ports and borders around the country and some elected officials have suggested that these devices be removed from store shelves until their safety can be guaranteed by the FDA, who claimed in a recently released study that e-cigarettes contain cancer-causing chemicals such as diethylene glycol and some nitrosamines.

Most media outlets have followed suit by warning of the dangers posed by e-cigarettes.

What nobody seems interested in reporting about the study, however, is its conclusion—which hardly warrants the critical reception e-cigarettes have received thus far. According to the EPA’s own report, both brands of e-cigarettes they tested contained “tobacco specific nitrosamines and tobacco specific impurities […] at very low levels,” and of the 18 nicotine cartridges that were tested, only one contained diethylene glycol, and only at 1 percent.

I will have the mother of all vanity posts about this topic tomorrow. This is just a well written primer by Mr. English.

Frankly, this is a disgrace. The only losers from e-cigs are Big Tobacco and Big Pharma.

For more, read Dr. Michael Siegel's blog on the subject.

Until tomorrow. Normal people who just hated carbon monoxide being blown in their face and went along with the denormalization and social engineering experiment against smokers can now join us to fight for freedom.

In this case, vaping is healthier than eating steaks filled with nitrosamines....and fascism.

Of course these damnable e-cigarettes are a massive danger to society! They’re not taxed at an insane rate and thus pose a serious risk to the financing of our monstrous spending level!

They must be stopped - STOPPED! - as quickly as possible!

And big gubmint, if these things really work as well as I’ve heard.

Less smokers, less taxes.

I've been using one for several weeks. Not only have I essentially stopped smoking cigarettes, I have verifiable improvement in my health and physical ability.

I didn't start out attempting to quit cigs, only to use it as an alternative. But within a couple of days I was down to one or two ‘real’ cigs a day. Even though I have a half a carton in the cupboard, I'm not tempted since the e-cig is so much cleaner. It gives you the nic you need without all the nasty stuff. I'm a 30 year plus smoker and never figured I would feel this way. I've cleaned out all the ashtrays, the stuff stinks to me now.

I can't say that I will ever quit nicotine, but this sure is a big improvement for me and those around me.

The recent focus by the FDA shows the true color of those involved. It's not about public health, it's about the act of smoking itself - it got Sir Walter Raleigh beheaded by the way... he was observed smoking his pipe while the Earl of Essex was executed and the Queen considered it an act of insolence.

Once they figure out how to put a thousand per cent tax on them, they’ll be okay.

what is your social experience with e-ciggies?
that is, have you e-ciggied in a restaurant after a meal? or at a ballgame? or at the mall? in a car with others? do you still walk outside to the porch to e-cig? or over to the designated ‘smoking’ area at work? How do those around you react to your e-cig?

thanks! blueplum

What’s to stop the Government from slipping in the occasional lethal dose of nicotine?

Personally, I vape everywhere I go. I’ve never had any hostility thrown at me. Only curiosity. I print out little cards describing the devices, with the Ecig forum’s link on the backs.

Thanks for the ping, JJ.

Thanks Eric for the ping. I still smoke analogs but I’m using my e-cig more. It is all about the govt not having an excessive tax in place on e-cigs. They’re “losing” all that tax income.
