Global warming is the new religion of First World urban elites

Geologist Ian Plimer takes a contrary view, arguing that man-made climate change is a con trick perpetuated by environmentalists

By Jonathan Manthorpe, Vancouver SunJuly 28, 2009

Ian Plimer has outraged the ayatollahs of purist environmentalism, the Torquemadas of the doctrine of global warming, and he seems to relish the damnation they heap on him.

Plimer is a geologist, professor of mining geology at Adelaide University, and he may well be Australia's best-known and most notorious academic.

Plimer, you see, is an unremitting critic of "anthropogenic global warming" -- man-made climate change to you and me -- and the current environmental orthodoxy that if we change our polluting ways, global warming can be reversed.

It is, of course, not new to have a highly qualified scientist saying that global warming is an entirely natural phenomenon with many precedents in history. Many have made the argument, too, that it is rubbish to contend human behaviour is causing the current climate change. And it has often been well argued that it is totally ridiculous to suppose that changes in human behaviour -- cleaning up our act through expensive slight-of-hand taxation tricks -- can reverse the trend.

They want to use Globull warming as an excuse to cut the world’s population down to size, less people = more control.

Chris Horner was on our local talk show this morning talking about this guy's book. Apparently it has created a furor in Australia, causing the government to delay their version of Cap and Trade by one year, and now the bill is so unpopular the government is afraid to reintroduce it for fear it will cause the government to fail and have to call for elections.

Pity, that.

While much of this is academic and amenable to manipulation for ‘best fit’ purposes it remains for future observation to settle the debate and that, of course, requires the passage of time and future generations to study what will then be their history and the true meaning of climatology will prevail.

In the meantime, behind the scenes and hidden to all but the select few with access to all the work in progress, the official RSS data are on track to declare 2009 the hottest ever with each month’s anomaly’s published figure reading higher than any previous year; the last two weeks have shown the highest-ever readings in the AMSU data surpassing that of 1998.

Now we have entered a period of continued development of the latest El Nino displacing this just-passed La Nina which served as a deterrent of the traditional switch to summer circulation in Arctic air pattern as we continue to experience cold tunnels of sinking air from the north over nort America and down through Europe.

This should lead to mild winters replacing frigid ones of late.

Look for RSS NASA and NOAA announcements within the next 25 days declaring July, 2009 to be hottest July ever recorded by man.

On the plus side this could go down as The Year Without a Hurricane.

Purging humankind of its supposed sins of environmental degradation has become a religion with a fanatical and often intolerant priesthood, especially among the First World urban elites.

Well, when those folks dumped Judaism or Christianity, they had to fill that void with something.

There is no problem with global warming, Plimer says repeatedly. He points out that for humans periods of global warming have been times of abundance when civilization made leaps forward.

That would likely also mean an increase in human population, another idea that these elites detest.

The apocalyptic rantings of the Greens are frightening children and harming their sleep in just the same ways as children’s anxieties were provoked by the “Nuclear Nightmares” of the Cold War. This is just one of the evils they have irresponsibly introduced into the world.

If we actually did have global warming, it would make vast stretches of Canada and Siberia temperate enough to sustain good farming.
