WASHINGTON (AFP) The US House of Representatives voted Friday to pump another two billion dollars into a program that lets consumers trade in gas-guzzling cars and trucks for more efficient vehicles.
Lawmakers voted 316-109 to prime the "cash-for-clunkers" program with monies taken from a giant economic stimulus package approved in early 2009 after the vastly popular effort burned through one billion dollars in its first week.
The measure must now clear the US Senate, where its fate is far less clear, amid disputes on whether to require higher fuel efficiency and greater emissions reductions before extending the campaign.
The program offers owners of old cars and trucks up to 4,500 dollars toward a new, more-efficient vehicle, a scheme meant to help stimulate the struggling auto industry while helping the environment.
The plan is modeled on similar programs in France, Germany, Italy and Spain, which have had some success in sparking sales of new autos.

Yur Gubamint Making Shur Ya Got Nice Wheels.
I have 2 clunkers I’d like to turn in for cash: The Obama administration and the Pelosi/Reid Congress.
You're lucky to get that. The lifeboats are for Congress critters only.
If this Cash for Clunkers program is a success....
Obama will adopt a new item in his Obamacare agenda:
Cash for Geezers.
Turn in old unproductive Granny to the nearest hospice and get a rebate for $4,500.
O-M-G! Just put a huge butterfly net over DC and be done with it.

Well at least AFP used the right word to describe it.. scheme. a risky scheme.. Marxist gubamint isn’t too good at risk assessment,, why would we want them to handle healthcare too. they mangle economies pretty darn well as is..
This is pretty much the average of the track record of governmentaly run programs.
This begs the question: Do we really want these irresponsible goons to even touch healthcare?
Whoever is the Secretary of Transportation in this administration could be under the bus in the next 30 days. ClunkerCar may become another Katrina moment without local or state fingerprints.
“...The plan is modeled on similar programs in France, Germany, Italy and Spain, ....”
Oh I get it now...whew.....I thought it was a BAD idea...../sarc
I wonder how many of these “new” fuel efficient cars will make there way to Craig’s List?? If they didn’t need the clunker in the first place, won’t they just turn around and make a profit instead??
Let’s not forget. That’s 2 billion dollars of OUR money.
the original bill sponsor wanted 4 billion and was happy to just get 1 billion and now 2 more..
this additional funding comes out of monies intended for renewable energy funds..
Clunkher and clunkhim models for the gender specific/equality sensitive 'progressives'.
The ‘clunkers’ are supposed to be crushed after the sale.
Supposed to be.
96 million was only the amount that was completely processed. The backlog appeared like it would consume the full one billion, that's why they stopped accepting new applications.
Exactly.....3X the money....already.....let’s apply that to their “plans” for healthcare.....it’s said to be, what 1.3 trillion????.....so that means really about $3 Trillion....a year???? Man, these people are delusional.
What is really crazy is the new cars will get much better gas mileage. Sounds great right?
With the price of gas futures up 20 cents a gallon since Tuesday cutting back on use, the gas guzzlers already taken out of service by the first round of replacements NOT using as much fuel thus causing an even bigger fuel and crude glut, there are probably going to be some pizzed off speculator investors in a couple of months
Put this with the BS GDP report, unemployment going through the roof and the fairy tale of how the economy is getting better we are probably going to see a REAL unraveling around October.
